Roon Server running on Synology & QNAP NAS (x64)

Hey Joe, I guess you responded to the discussion I had with Mike?
Are you running Roon on a NAS yourself? I do it without an issue since the beginning of the year. Important information is that you should run the Roon Server on an SSD. This could be a cheap, external USB 3.0 SSD.
Officially Roon is still only recommending the QNAP TVS-471.

Hans,

Not yet. I'm thinking about a new NAS and seriously thinking about doing this. I don't want a computer in my stereo/room so this looks like a great alternative. Seeing you love it makes me think I can setup one too. I did just buy a new iMac but not sure I want to use it for music.

Really thinking about an SGM to serve up Roon.....keeping the storage on my NAS

Go for it Joe, its only $16,000.00 :disbelief: for a computer. No doubt it sounds marvelous and no doubt fast and the capacity (power) enough for Roon, HQ Player and DS512

OMG! Too rich for my blood :)

But it does look awesome.

i5 equipped NAS drives are so expensive to begin with, that it makes little sense. It is much cheaper to get a NUC + regiular NAS.

I already have a Synology nas setup and just need to run the new iMac in my room. It's definitely quiet so no worries there.

Depending on the CPU power of your NAS, and the size of your music library, you may find the performance less than desirable for some functions (i.e Search). Then again, if you already have Roon, there is no cost in trying it out. Last year I ran it briefly on a Synology 1812+, with about 31k tracks. It worked fine, save that some of the U/I functions on the control side were a little pokey, however that I attribute to the CPU power of the NAS, as well as only have 3GB of RAM installed in the NAS. This was prior to the 1.3 Roon release with its more extensive set of DSP options.

I have since happily moved onto running a Intel NUC for my RoonServer. FWIW, YMMV.

+1

That is the correct way to do it. I have Syn 1815+ NAS and run Roon from on my music server.

Would running Roon on a NAS still be better than serving the music from a computer with solid state boot drive and a large hard drive with the music on it? I have a little over 4.5 TB of music on a NAS and copied to a USB 3 external drive. Would I still be better with the NAS and Roon or can I just use my new fast iMac as an all in one solution?

I guess I'm asking for best practices regarding sound quality. I have both PCM and DSD files but also stream a lot. I'm sort of tired of the endless tweaking. Now that I am thinking a fresh start, what do you guys recommend? I love my modified Sonos and Lumin U1 feeding my Ayre QX5-20 dac. The QX5 even can be fed from the network as a Roon endpoint. Maybe I'm overthinking this? What would you do?

What I'd do.

Leave the NAS as a file store.
Install Roon server on your iMac.
Stream direct to the QX-5 from Roon.
If the ethernet will support DSD128, try Roon's ability to convert to DSD. Ayre's filter is great but you might find the linear phase smooth along with bypassing the ESS9038's internal PCM to DSD conversion sounding a bit better.

Joe - if you have a little time try both.

1. iMac - running Roon and the USB external HD holding your music library.

2. iMac - running Roon and the NAS holding your music library.

Play some music from the first setup for a while, and then the next day try the other setup. After a day or so, try the other setup again.

If there is a negligible difference between the two to your ears then go with whichever setup you prefer and/or is simpler to maintain.

Excellent idea, I think I know for myself either setup will be great. But I plan on making the comparison.

Another option given to me was a Sonic Transporter from Small Green Computer. I'll look into that tonight.

Joe - that's what I'm exploring as well. Pimped out with i7 and max ram. I'm assuming we then run ROON core? I wonder if it runs ROON ROCK?

Mike,

A friend of mine swears that Roon on Linux sounds best. I'm sure Rock is the same, a lightweight Linux version.
