Roon Labs Software walk through #TIDAL #MQA #Mediaserver #NAS

I knew the Beta was out there but this is the first run through I have seen posted. Thanks for finding this.

I expected we would have to wait 'till after the Munich show to see anything.
 
I have been following their link for some time now. It seems powerful, and actually has way more capability than I will ever consider using.

It's what I've always wanted, except I did not want to dive into the Meridian ecosystem. Now I can.

BTW, Roon will recognize even Vinyl or Cassette version of my albums!
 
He didn't show how to use the software to actually create playlists and play music. The other issue is the lack of iPad ap at launch. I don't want a laptop as a integral part of my system.

Jim- iPad and Android Tablets, or if you want a Touch Screen PC or PC Laptop.

So the playlist thing is a ( + ) sign and "Add to Playlist " where you can write in a new named list or add to exisiting.

The strange thing is that I do less playlisting- I just hit play artist radio and much like Sooloos the music will "swim*" to related songs or songs in the genre. Then for real playlist I just mooch off of what TIDAL creates. It's a better Pandora than Pandora could ever be.

*Swim is like a swear word to run labs, as it's propritary named feature of the Meridian Digital Music System (You knew that, but saying this out loud)

Dan.. Much like Chris did, you will be jumping from Artist to Artist and reading such rich and interesting information about how your music is connected. It's not the cheapest solution but it's of HIGH value. $119/yr, $500/lifetime...

Sorry, I didn't really mean playlist I should have used the term queue.I would assume they create a queue similar to what they designed into their original Sooloos software.

Does Roon have a built in burning tool to get CD's onto your server? I don't like having to use multiple tools to get my music onto my server.
Do you have option to burn partial albums, or is the entire album looked at as a file? (A weakness of Sooloos)
Does the queue show the depth and bitrate of tracks being played?

Just like Sonos or Sooloos, select to "Add Next" or "Add to Queue"

Roon requires external ripping software. I used a bunch and I highly recommend dBpowerAmp. Partial rip would be done in ripping software.

Roon shows Bit depth and sample rate, along with file codec. e.g. 24 bit / 192Khz FLAC

Considering you used to have to buy a Meridian/Sooloos system to get a quarter of the functionality of ROON, and now you can run it on a Mac or PC, $119/year is super cheap. The bigger the collection you have and how extensively you make use of Tidal might play into it a bit as well.

And, they will have tablet based client stuff soon. Personally even though I'm a Mac guy, running ROON on an HP touch screen all in one, that set me back $479 at Best Buy (as opposed to $8500 for a Control 15) works wonderfully well.

Jeff, I remember reading your premonition in the well photographed pages of Tone Audio regarding the sooloos system and I was hooked way back then. You really communicated the value of the Sooloos/Meridian System. Just not $8500 hooked.

Tell me more. I noticed that the interface is very "touch" friendly. I may have to do the HP Touch PC and I am thinking about an optical USB cable to my USB DAC. (Plus I am able unlock the McIntosh Voicing Tool for my MEN220, which is *sigh* PC only)

And you can either use a USB or an Optical cable, there is no USB Optical. However, all the HP's use USB out. You may just need to update PC drivers, which is easy.
 
Nope. Would never use this, with that cheapie little digital converter built into the cable. I'm going to stick my neck out and guess that this would not sound good.
 
"Good enough" in this guys very modest system isn't going to fly in mine. I'd seriously buy this from a dealer or online retailer that will let you return it if you don't like it. That little digital converter in the cable will be the weak link in the chain. I can't see having a $60,000 dCS stack and letting digital conversion of any kind take place in a 20 dollar cable. Not on my watch, sorry.

Okay cool, that is completely understandable. I wouldn't want to ruin the sound quality of the full dCS kit. What's your plan to hook your HP Touch Screen PC to the dCS system?
