I can't say one design
eg. passive RIAA is any better sonically than say LCR. I've heard good phono stages using both. And as we all know, things are seldom equal. One thing you can see is that it seems to cost more to implement a LCR design for some reason.
Interesting thing though is that there are many phono sections using using LCR nowadays and as far as I can tell, all use a transformer step up. So again, do you gain at one stage and lose at another with a SUT?
Some of the LCR phono sections that I could find:
Allnic
Audiovida/Aurora
Audio Note
Ypsilon
Experience the Music (I think JazzDoc uses his gear and know Mike L. tried his little 2 watt amps; don't know if MikeL tried the phono section!)
Experience Music, Inc - LCR Phono Stage and good explanation of LCR phono networks and why their advantages here
Thrax
WAVAC
YS-Audio
Zanden
