I found my UMic-1 yesterday, and downloaded REW. I did manage to to an exploration run, with the mic in my chair, held up at ear level. I ordered a good SPL meter for setting it up further.

While we are baby sitting today, I have been exploring some of the REW guides. Most seem to be a bunch of years old.

Does anyone have a more recent guide, or your own suggestions on getting things set up the best?

I have 4 pieces of corner bass traps, and a large flat bass trap. I had not used first reflection panels in my old room. I have IKEA Kallax units near those spots currently. There are 3 entrances to my room, a French door on the right wall, a sliding patio door on the back wall, and a standard door on the left wall.

I will need to try

1) no bass traps
2) 2 corner traps
3) all 5 traps

I will probably just run these with all 3 door closed. Assuming any traps are actually needed. But I want to find the “best” for critical listening, and a second best config for casual listening. I know there will be different door configurations during the different seasons.

I tried REW a few years back and I always found it more complex than it was worth - at least for me.

I was trying to measure in my listening spot to adjust the phase on the sub so it was 100% in phase with the main speakers. I never could figure it out.

I would check YouTube. There were some people who had done tutorials on it that I did find more helpful than just guide.

I have it (REW) along with a mic and used it several years. For me, I found (Studio Six Digital) Audio Tools (https://studiosixdigital.com/) App for a tablet or phone and this mic - https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-iMM-6-iDevice-Calibrated-Microphone-390-810?quantity=1 easier to use. I also have an Audio Control RTA which I've had for many years and that's even easier (https://reverb.com/item/12254790-au...zer-rta-analog-see-what-your-mixes-sound-like) which came with a calibrated mic (and I bought a mic stand)

There several good tutorials on YouTube.
Also check out websites like ASR. Lots of folks with experience using REW there.
How are you planning to use it?

My old room was 9.5x14 foot small. I used REW, and worked with GIK to help damped the 40hz bass boom in this room.

My new room is 17x25, with the back half 2 stories high. I have the corner bass traps from the old room, as well as the rear wall bass trap. I also have my UMIK-1, and tripod to measure with.

As a newly retired person, I’m going to get my measurement technique streamlined, and play with my room treatments, absorbers, and door open/closed, and perhaps listening position alteration.

From my searching so far, REW has become even easier to use, as I definitely noticed several bigger changes during the calibration setup. I added a good SPL meter to accurately set the system volume.

Going to my first Pacific North West Audio Society meeting today, looking to meet some new people, and perhaps learn something..

If you listen to a digital source and use software like Roon, you can have someone create DSP filters for you.
These room correction filters use the measurements from REW to fix speaker/room issues. You WILL hear a difference.
You could use these filters in addition to the room treatments that you are using.

Yes, the convolution files. I tried those in the past. Unfortunately they don’t help the vinyl. So I ant to get the room set up as well as possible. And I do already own some bass traps.
