Houston I have a problem....
When I crank it up I get very occasional loud static on the right side. This could be a power amp problem or a speaker problem - the system is tri-amped and it the bass amp/speaker. Whats more likely - bad capacitors in the amp or other problems, or a bad speaker that I need to re-cone? Next step is to switch bass speakers for mids and see what happens.

Switch the amp output cables to the speakers. If the problem switches to the other speaker then it probably is the amp, or preamp. If the same speaker has the static then the speaker is the problem.

Unlikely to be speakers if it's a short static click. Switch off all your equipment, the turn on ONE AT A TIME starting with the power amp. If that's quiet, then the preamp and work back until you've identified the culprit. Or switch speaker cables from left to right. Should be simple to see which bit of kit is causing this. My guess - a power amp. Do your power amps have a soft-start feaure whereby connection to the speaker is made by a relay a few seconds after powering up?

Yes the power amps have a relay that gives a soft start. The problem only occurs at high volume and then only intermittently

Sorry, I misunderstood the timing of the problem. Next question - do you have a mains filter or regenerator? Could the static coincide with another household appliance such as a fridge starting up? I've had this as a problem with one amp in the past. If so, there are simple cures.

I wish it was that simple but the problem only occurs at high volume - NEVER at regular listening volume. There is a surge protector and a power conditioner feeding all components. A simple speaker swap like Blue Fox suggested is an easy check which I will do today. Thanks for the help everybody

You have a bunch of switches and knobs so I would exercise them a bit . I had a Mod Squad Line Drive preamp that would crackle once in a while , after I exercised the switches the crackle went away. Good luck.
