Regarding streaming, network switches and filters…

I’ve read some threads regarding the efficacy of network switches and filters recently with interest, since after finding myself having to split my system apart, the system at my (small) primary residence will be going digital only due to space considerations. Having somewhat of a technical background, I’d like to have some idea of what’s going on in my setup when I contemplate such a change as this, even if I’m not completely clear on how these devices achieve that end.

It appears to me that both network switches and filters are both attempting to address the same issue, that being extraneous noise being introduced into the streamer via the ethernet cable. If that’s the case, there may be some redundancy in their function.

The setup as it exists: Directstream w’ Bridge II > Von Gaylord LAD-L2 > KR Audio Antares VA-300 SET > JBL. HDI 3800 speakers. ICs are SR Tesla Precision Reference, PCs are also SR - Master Coupler X series and Titan T3. The Tesla PR speaker cables had to stay with the Odeons, so they went to the cabin. I’m currently using Tributaries series 6 biwire cables, which have proven themselves to be pretty decent, if not up to the level of the Teslas.

So if the objective is to turn the black to fuligen, which is the better option at this point? Resources are limited these days, so I’d like to get my mind around it and get it right the first time. What say you?

I don’t have the huge experience of many here. My biggest bang for the buck was to insert some segment of optical Ethernet into the chain, preferably near the streamer. The optical portion does not allow the upstream issues from ever getting to the streamer. (Only the last optical to copper converter is left) I previously used the UpTone Audio EtherRegen device. Now this function is provided by the MSB Digital Director.

Spend whatever you want though, there are a plethora of devices, and schemes, out there. Worth looking for those with trial period or good return policies. Then you can ascertain if the device is helpful in your situation.

In this instance, inserting an optical cable isn’t an option. The Bridge II streaming card plugs directly into the Directstream chassis, so the ethernet cable plugs directly into the Directstream.
