When I was recycling some equipment in recent weeks, I was able to work with a friend and his wife to build a righteous system for them.

This couple, in their early 70's, are CD oriented and have no inclination to change. 35 years is a long time for music lovers who spent their peak earning (and listening) years buying CDs. There is an old turntable and a dusty record collection in their listening room, but none of it has been used for decades. They were using an NAD receiver and a Denon CD players with some old Mission book-shelfs, all from 30 years ago.

They bought my beautiful Diapason Adamantes III 25th monitors for half of what I paid for them. My audio dealer pitched in with a deal on a new Bryston R-60 Integrated that was an opened box demo. I just today found a private sale online for a like-new Creek Audio Destiny 2 CD Player that was state of the art a few years ago when folks stopped buying CD players without digital inputs. The retail value of the Isaac & Brenda's new rig is $14k. All in they spent just $7500.

For these two classical music lovers, a system like this is a revelation. What more do they need? What is more, with generous boxed CD sets on Amazon selling treasure troves for $2/disc, this is a great time to get into CD's. Really.

In fact, I would tell any non-hobbyist that the biggest opportunity going is to buy a reference caliber CD player that was released 5-10 years ago and now resides on the Island of misfit toys! And those who say spinning the silver disc lacks nostalgic charm are missing the point. Anything that gets our friends and loved ones out of Mp3's is a victory.

I'd almost like to hook myself up with a Simaudio Moon Evolution Supernova for pennies on the dollar, cancel my Tidal subscription, and sell my analog gear to make a big deposit into my kids' college fund. Almost...

Very nice of you to help them out! Fabulous to in their 70s and still be able to enjoy good music. Great story!

Totally agree. As a classical music lover myself, I have been throughly enjoying many wonderful Redbook CD's from my public library, which has over 30,000 to choose from. The boxed sets from Amazon are indeed a bargain. I am currently working my way through a boxed set of 55 Great Vocal Recitals (Decca 478 9679, about $80 at Amazon). Fabulous!

Almost....., it is a sickness we have..... ;) It's nice to pay it forward, love doing shit like that.
