Anyone using a record mat on their VPI Classic? I know that VPI says to just use a bare platter just wondering what other classic owner might be doing

Dave, I have always played as it came. The screw down center clamp combined with the washer on the spindle compresses the record flat on the platter creating a vacuum between the record and the platter. It's really quite ingenious !! Sort of like a vacuum hold down system without the pumps !!

I tried it with the mat, but felt it increased static electricity. I know that seems odd....but that was my findings. I think it sounds best on the metal platter too.

Mike, your Classic 3 is different from the Classic 1. The Classic 1 uses a screw down clamp over a washer that compresses the record to the platter, you have a ring and weighted center clamp. With the Classic 1's way of keeping the record flat it should not be used with a mat in my opinion.

Ah. Gotcha.

Thanks Guy's
I just finished setting up my Classic 1 I got a killer deal on it the thought of not using a mat was kinda foreign to me this is my first real HiEnd table

I tried a mat on my Classic 2 and didn't like it. I actually have the Classic 3 ring and clamp and still didn't like the mat.

Thanks Guy's

Awesome Dave !!!!! Congrats!!!! You are a happy man!! The thin rubber mat that comes with the table is just a protective cover for the platter during shipping. As Mark said the rubber washer and screw down clamp is an awesome little setup and works very well. I've been through 6 or 7 different platters on several vpi tables and none of them sounded better with a mat. And I've tried one or another on most all of them.
Best of luck with the new table and give us a little review when you have some hours on it!!
