Recommendations for cool running, sweet sounding amp(s) ...

Joe

Another thought, the Odyssey Amps hand built in Indianapolis by Klaus Bunge who is and has been the distributor for the highly thought of and expensive Symphonic Line amplifiers from Germany. These amps are built with the same philosophy as the JOB amps. Quality parts and circuits from the original designer and company in more "utilitarian' cases and sold ID. All of Klaus' amps are based on Rolf's design's using many of their parts with Symphonic's complete support and blessing. I have owned one of Klaus' amps since 1999. For a space of about 5 years he sold through dealers and then decided that ID worked best for him. Depending on what you intend to drive with them and how much power you need, there are several models to chose from or if you call him on the phone he can build to your specifications. His amps are stable down to Apogee driving standards.

Thanks Jack,

I've been looking at these over the years and after a long break in, they seem to get excellent reviews. I'll check them out again.

Joe, I would nominate; Rogue Medusa hybrid, Vitus, Hegel, and Rowland.

I am sure my Job 225 will be fine but I have this insatiable urge for another SS amp. I am in the process of trying to find a good preamp with tone controls to match the Job. I have a feeling that's all I'll need. Want is another thing.

Having owned three different Odyssey setups, I find that "long break-in" thing to be more myth than fact. I have never found them to take anymore break-in than any other SS amps.

Dave, Do you have any more thoughts on the Medusa?

It, like the rest of the Rogue lineup performs well beyond it's price point, while $3995 is not cheap I feel it's ability to provide 200 watts of power into an 8 ohm load with the ability to dbl down, yet at the same time be a totally musical amp throughout the 20-20k spectrum (vs. a lot of previous Class D attempts) make this piece a winner

How about a comparison with the most appropriate tubes vs your Plinius or 180 monos?

my nod goes to the RadioTechnigue's. They seemed to convey the most mid-range magic, euphoric coloration that some of us love perhaps !

How did it fare on the Zus?

unfortunately it didn't make it over to my sons house.

Thanks Dave. Have you had a chance to audition the JOB 225 in your system?

Any more thoughts about Naim, Joe?

I may break down and give the SN2 a try. I am thinking about a preamp with tone controls in the meantime. Not sure what will pop up first.

I hear ya. It sounds like a sweet pre with tone controls might give you exactly the SS configuration you're looking for. Those Jobs sound like they have magic under the hood.

Joe,
Here is my recommendation that will not break your wallet and will be easy to sell later, a truly great and sweet sounding amp with power the MC352. There is 2 versions one has the label on the transformers sank in and others is not, get the ones that the label is not sank in and those are sweet sounding, the last of traditional Mcintosh sound but are quad balance that makes the amp transparent also with better sound than the old ones.
Good hunting

Mcintosh 601's! :woot:

MC452 or MC601's might be interesting.

Very interesting. This might be fun to play with.
