Recommendations for cool running, sweet sounding amp(s) ...

Thanks David. I don't plan on doing anything until after CES for sure.

I hate to kill the tubes in the ART monos for background music when the mood strikes.

another reason to consider Plinius……………biasing switch from A - A/B would accomplish this nicely. A pair of SA-103's would drive the speakers you mention easily……… as would a pair of Spectral MonoBlocks !

George, you can't be serious about Class 'A' Pass gear …'running cool' !!

George,

I am waiting for the XA.8 amps to come out thought. I bet they will be nice.

Joe-Seriously, how many amps can you possibly use in your system? With all of the amps you currently have, what are you still lacking that you feel the need to buy yet another amp?

I still have a few electrical outlets that that are open. :) Besides, I am only doing it to tell you guys about them. I feel it's my duty. Mike is making me do it.

Coolest running (and best sounding) amp on the market today is the CH Precision A1 amplifier. A single A1 will drive any speaker on the planet and will never break a sweat. Since it has adjustable gain and feedback you can basically tune it the way you like. You should definitely read the recent TAS review of CH Precision because it's spot on. Magico used CH Precision digital at a recent CES but not sure if the A1 was out yet. Dartzeel also runs cool but I chose CH over it as it's profoundly better sounding. It's super fast and controlled but musical and linear at the same time. You can see in the Magico/CH video that the A1 is using very little power to drive the Magico S5, which is kind of shocking....

Mark - Joe loves amps. He loves to try them in his system. He loves to rotate them for a change. Tubes, back to solid state and then tubes again. It was Joe who discovered the amazing little JOB225 amp and told me about it. He has had some many amazing amps and he has become a real treasure trove of information for different amps and preamp combos.

I've been through 20 DACS in the past 24 months, so I'm not going to judge!

Wisnon - the Graaf 400 is an excellent suggestion! While it will run warmer than the Karan amps, methinks Joe would be rather surprised by how it performs when sat next to pieces by McIntosh or Bryston. :)

If you don't live with a component for an extended period of time, how do you know what it really brings to the table? I almost made the mistake of selling the KEF LS50 speakers short because I didn't give them enough time to break in and fully evaluate them. I had to do a mea culpa for that screw up.

Mark - you are right. I think break in is brutal. If I didn't know what the S5's were capable of, I would have chucked them out the window by now (metaphorically speaking of course!).

That being said, I love that Wilson breaks in the drivers before putting them in the cabinets. My Alexia's sounded superb from day one and only get better each day!

I agree one has to live with a component to make an informed decision. I have the luxury of letting my gear play as long as necessary until I feel comfortable with it. I routinely play my system 12 hours a day and when a new component comes in, 24X7 until I feel it's broken in. Sure some combos of gear that I've had were/are stellar, but I usually rotate a piece (once broken in) for a week or two, then rotated through again. At any one time I'll have 2 or 3 pieces to play, with the the ones I like staying, while the ones I get tired of get sold or traded in.

I have to be honest. My Job 225 is getting the most play these days. I love that thing and believe it's hard to beat. I don't want to waste the tubes in my ART monos for background music but otherwise, it's like getting a new piece when you have it heard it in a few weeks.

Joe, the JOB still has me shaking my head. A $10,000+ amp disguised as a $1700 amp. I keep looking at that stupid little box thinking "how?"
