So now that I have my new amp situation all squared (TEAC AX-501), it's time to try out some new speakers.

1) Budget is around 1k (new or used), but this can be stretched a bit for the right candidate
2) Monitor or floorstander, doesn't matter... I'm open to either
3) Not needing a sub would be nice, so something that goes down to 40 Hz or better
4) Sensitivity and impedance is not a big deal now, since I think my amp is up to the task
5) Very small room (10x13)

Some of the speakers I own, or have owned:

B&W 685 (still have)
Ascend Sierra (still have)
Totem Staff (excellent)
Totem Model-1 (OK)
Totem Mite (nah)
Magnepan MMG (excellent)
Paradigm Atom v5 (great)
Paradigm Monitor 7 (pretty good)
Def Tech Studio 65 (meh)
Klipsch RF-62 (ouch, my bleeding ears)
Monitor Audio RS6 (good)
Energy CF-50 (pretty good for the price!)
B&W CM5 (excellent)

That's all I can remember right now, but there's lots more.

Thanks.

They will stretch your budget, but the Scansonic MB-1's are really really good. Heard them at RMAF 2014. Nice!

PM me if you need help finding a dealer.

The Scansonic MB 1s retail for around $2500, you should be able to get them for less. The price of the stands they should be placed on (low mass, somewhat flexible due to the design of the speaker) adds about $500. At that point, I would consider the MB 2.5s.

Some speakers to consider at that price point:
KEF LS50s (I've not heard them; there's a guy I've bought from before selling a pair in white right now)
Dynaudio Excite X14s
A used pair of Monitor Audio RX8s
A used pair of these: Dynaudio Contour 1 8 MKII MK2 Speakers Pristine Condition | eBay

Good luck!

Mike: How would you compare the sound of the MB-1 to the Raidho X-1 ? That is if you've heard both.

Yeah, the Dynaudio Excite series is pretty incredible. My old 42s are nice for what they cost, but the matching Excite's are easier to drive and sound better.

I just bought some Tekton Mini Lores and they sound pretty great. $650 shipped for the standard Matt finish.

These are one of the best speakers I know anyway. Of course this is only valid in small rooms, with direct listening distance or with a subwoofer. Active studio monitors Neumann KH120a. Used by a lot of professionals and everybody who knows this sound agrees this pretty much perfect!

In The Netherlands I can by pair for 1210 Euro. (Neumann KH 120A actieve referentie studio monitor kopen? | Goedkope | Promo | Studio monitor)

I don't know your gear but if you for instance have a Linn streamer or another streamer or disc player with variable out you don't even need an amplifier. And mark my words: listening is believing!

You live in the States, if so for $850 I would recommend the Philharmonitor its a 2-way bookshelf speaker, using good components for a $850 speaker. . The man that makes them does the crossover work for Salk speakers, Dennis Murphy. The Philharmonitor

Since you liked the Magnepan MMG's definitely try to give the new .7's a listen. Frequency response is 45-22khz. They are a ton of speaker for the money and would work nicely in your 10x13 room.
