Today is my first day off after 19 days straight of work (hooray for the weekend!), and I wanted to make a post about one of the fun things I was able to do last weekend during my work trip to San Jose and the SF Bay area. I happened to hear on the radio driving around that the Symphony Silicon Valley was doing a live performance of Raiders of the Lost Ark, and I decided to get a ticket to it on Saturday night and check it out. What they do is have the movie showing on screen with the musical score stripped out - it still has the dialog and sound effects, and the symphony orchestra plays the soundtrack alongside the movie being played.
It was an absolutely fantastic experience to be able to have the score performed live with the movie - bringing the different parts that you might not catch to the forefront - along with the increased realism, dynamics, and emotion of hearing the music live! The symphony did a fantastic job of keeping exact pace and timing with the movie as well. Raiders of the Lost Ark is just a fun movie anyway, and I hadn't seen it in quite a while. I was incredibly pleased that I took myself out to see it, and I highly recommend going if you have a chance!
It appears that from the website that it is a pretty limited initial list of cities it is showing in, although there are other films that are being included as part of the Film Concerts Live series. Here is the website in case you are interested in checking it out and learning more: http://filmconcertslive.com/movies/raiders-of-the-lost-ark/
