Hello,

I just wanted to ask everyone here for some help regarding my set-up.

Which will be the better way to go?

1. Chordette Hugo DAC-> Job 225 Preamp -> Job 225 Amp

2. PS Audio Directstream DAC/Preamp -> Job 225 Amp

3. Marantz NA-11S1 DAC -> Job 225 Preamp -> Job 225 Amp

All 3 options would cost around the same. (couple hundred give or take)
Certainly not a headphone guy, so it seems like the amp section on the Hugo DAC is a plain waste but heard the DAC part is outstanding.

Its strictly for two channel music/ht- 60/40.

Speakers are Evolution Acoustics MicroOnes. Im planning to upgrade to MicroTwos when it comes out at the end of this year in winter or MMTwos next year. (When I have enough saved up).

All inputs welcome! Thanks!

I'll start. Having only heard some of these pieces, my first choice would be number one. I think a preamp is necessary and the Hugo is a superb DAC. The PS Audio DAC should be excellent but I'd still want a preamp.

I have to agree with Joe, fyi on that Marantz which is a fine Network Player your going to need a pre-amp from the time I played with it at a dealer. The Hugo is a pretty good DAC not to mention its a portable headphone amp/dac should you wish to take it on the road, but you need a pre-amp. The little Hugo sounds really good. The PS Audio Directstream which out of all the DACS you listed I have not heard, so I will not comment. Not sure how the volume control stacks up to a dedicated pre-amp, but the reviews so far indicated the DAC is pretty good, but at a higher price than the other two in your list.

ps: I have never heard the Job amp and the Job pre is still not out as yet.. I would think those two working together will make a great combination to any DAC or network player

Thanks for the input guys! I am really considering the Hugo DAC and will prabably order one tommorow but magnolia just called me and told me they have a MCIntosh D100 open box for under 2 grand.

What do you guys think? If you guy think the Hugo is still a better DAC then ill prabably order one tommorow..

Thanks!

As much as I love McIntosh, and not having heard either, I'd still be inclined to go with the Hugo. I do think that it will benefit from a better power supply like a Teddy Pardo PS.

The Hugo does DSD if that's important to you. The D100 doesn't.

Thanks for the input Joe and Mike! I also think the Chord Hugo is the DAC to get ATM. It seems to be getting rave reviews over at Headfi.org..

From what I know and have heard, Marantz still makes one of the best musically engaging components like EVER.. and ONLY if someone had both heard the HUGO and Marantz NA-11S1 in A/B..

BTW, thanks for the review on the Maranatz NA-11S1 mike really enjoyed reading it!

Thanks for the input CPP. I Will be ordering the HUGO from moon audio soon and although the volume knob is on the unit (which will force me to get up everytime to change volume PITA) it should be fine for 2-3 more weeks until JOB releases preamp w/ remote.
