Question about Venom V14

Hi team,

I understand that the recent Venom V14 power cord was specially designed to be used with computers, servers, switches, clocks,... and has a noise reduction targeting the type of noise typically emitted by such devices. I think it's just great that Shunyata decided to release such cables at this low price point!

I was wondering whether the Venom V14 is also recommended for computers using a Linear Power Supply such as my Mac Mini what was modified by Mojo audio? To be clear the modified Mac mini is fed by an external Illuminati V2 LPS and I am wondering whether the Venom V14 would be a good choise to feed this LPS.

I too ran a server with LPSU, the HDPLEX 200W silverwound version with a Meridian MC200 server/streamer. For sure better cabling and PD helps.
Getting those gigabit switches an LPSU and better cabling/PD can also affect perceived noisefloor.

Ifi DC ipurifier 2 also helps with quieting down PSU noise to extremely low levels but is no replacement for a good PSU.
 
Have Bernardl correct me if I'm wrong, but I suppose the point is that if we have a digital component powered by an SMTP, then it is clear that a Venom V14 Digital would be very suitable. But if we change the SMTP for an LPS, then the suitable cable is the Venom V14 Digita or rather the Venom V14 Normal. It would be interesting to hear Caelin's opinion.
 
PumaCat has done a lot of experimenting with these cables. Perhaps he will chime in.

But the basics are correctly stated by Francisco.

In my experience, the answer is Yes.

I put a Venom V14D Digital power cord for my Keces P3 LPS that powers my SOtM SMS-200 UltraNeo and heard a notable increase in spaciousness, top-end air and openness, and more precise imaging.

YMMV, but my overall experience is that the Venom V14D Digital has improved the sound quality of every device I've used it with including fiber media convertor power supplies, Mac Minis, Linear power supplies and....the video quality of HDTVs.

with all the new v2 cables at your home. Did you have a chance to compare the Venom 14D against a v2 Alpha? As Caelin pointed out the Venom is the cable to go for streamers. So I was planning to get the Venom for my Aurender. Just wanted to make sure I‘m not missing out on some sonic gains...

The Aurender is not a purely digital domain device. It has a built in DAC and therefore puts out an analog signal. It will benefit from the best PC that you can provide for it. The Delta v2 or Alpha v2 would, by far, out perform a Venom V14.
 
Caelin, you are the designer, but I admit that I find it hard to believe that a purely digital device such as the Taiko Audio Extreme, works better with a Venom V14 Digital, than with a Sigma NR V2

I‘m referring to the streaming only devices like the N10/N100H or the W20SE that don‘t have a built-in DAC.

The Venom V14 Digital is designed expressly for accessory digital type devices. Examples are Ethernet switches, computers, NAS, disc arrays, optical converter, monitors, and other computer devices that usually have power bricks for their power supplies.

The V14D has a different NR filter profile specially suited to these type of devices.

That’s not to say that the more expensive Venom NR V12 and V10 don’t work as well. It simply means that the more expensive cables will not likely give you a significant improvement in performance over the V14D. And it doesn’t make a lot sense to put a $400 power cord on a $200 Ethernet switch.

But of course if you want to experiment just go for it and let’s us know what you think.

Again, as Caelin pointed out, one should do some comparisons to find out what works best, and my assumption is that for a $24,000 "streamer/network bridge", depending on the its design, and specifically, it's power supply, it may be the case that a higher specification Shunyata NR v2-series power cord may work better than a Venom V14D Digital. Again, its always best to gather data and make an informed decision.

However, the vast majority of "computer/networking/network interface" devices use the dreaded switch-mode power supply "bricks". The SMPS are insidious and highly problematical for devices that are in a strict digital domain, as they cause low-source and high-source impedance leakage current that creates all sorts of problems, not the least of which is increased clock-phase noise which is quite audible and has a deleterious impact on digital music reproduction. The Venom V14D Digital PC was specifically designed for dealing the problems these types of products create in digital playback (and/or video applications).

Just on that point. I have a $24,000 Esoteric N-01 network streamer and it sounds no different whether it's plugged in to a Denali 6000/S or not. So your hunch about a higher specification power cord might well be on the money. Your mileage with these things can vary wildly.
 
brodricj, It sounds like there is another weaker link somewhere else. Have you tried putting your network stack on Denali? I'm just saying that usually sources respond well, but if they dont, start looking somewhere else for a culprit.

Sorry to hear about the Halcro's not responding to the Denali, are you using a Sigma V2 NR to the amps?
