Quite interesting list on the Star Tribune.

I obviously stopped following Prince after 1993, as basically all work thereafter was unknown to me.

Guys...coming to this thread late; because someone told me about the Jaw Dropping thread...and I was looking for that. But let me add my .02 here.

I am, a life-long (OK, since ~12) Prince fan. I've been to shows...I've been to after-shows(!); I have 100s of his CDs ('nuff said ;))

Having been a fan, for 36 years...I've often had to explain/defend, his "genius". The truth is...most of what the casual fan knows; the stuff on the radio...the stuff that got "popular". Wasn't even really, his best or most-revealing work, IMO.

That's why his shows, after-shows...and the previously-mentioned Vault; have led, to some like me...having 100s of CDs. He saved some of his best stuff...just for the fans.

As for the guitar playing; sure...most cite the HOF thing, because again. It was what a w i d e audience saw, and was aware of. I could show, and play you things...that would set your hair on fire. Players know how good he is. I've met some in my day...and they either have great respect for his playing; or if they don't...I've lent them a few things, and they come back amazed.

No one's going to hear, a 10-minute virtuoso guitar-solo...on the f*cking radio! LOL

Man got to agree with ya. To me his best work was always live.

very critical reviews. Sounds like these reviewers only started buying Prince albums in 1993 and back tracked. Was it out of 5 stars, as there was none?

Can't agree with their views on his 2nd album, Controversy and Diamond and pearls - all far better than 2 stars.

I think it's a 4-star system. You'll notice the absence of a 5th grayed-out star beyond the 4th star on certain ratings.

I agree on all points. I'll also add that his rating of the Love Symbol album is much too low, as I think it's one of his better post-Sign albums. His remarks makes me think that he was referring to a different album by mistake. I think Controversy sometimes gets a few demerits from reviewers because it falls in between what are generally regarded as stronger albums, Dirty Mind and 1999, and suffers from the comparison.

That is the trouble with reviewers, they are always comparing rather than listening to the album on its own merits.

I agree re Love Symbol - superb album. Prince had a knack of taking unknown musicians and bringing them into his fold to create great music.

In fact spinning it right now :celebrate008_2: The Max on side two is one of my fav Prince songs.

D'Angelo covering the Prince track Sometimes it Snows in April. I believe from this weeks Jimmy Fallen show.

A really special heartfelt version that DÁngelo had trouble in finishing. Just beautiful.

Shane, I often wonder how these guys can keep performing given the content & the circumstances, Eric Clapton & his song about his son is another example.

17 albums into my Prince discology and its 1995 The Gold Experience. What srikes me is not the quantity of albums he has made, but the quality. Gold is no different. For me ts is the end of his Warner Brothers record contract as the last two seemed to be going thru the motions.
His albums from here on go all over the play from brilliance to somewhat self indulgent in places but still a rewarding listen.

Legend.

How unthinking he was to his family.....not having (at least) a will....should have had an irrevocable trust.... Now the government will get over 50% of his wealth..in addition, the value to all of his unpublished music (could be substantial) is in addition to the +50%. The government will declare the value of that music (purely arbitrarily....a guess favorable to the tax man). Big money flushed for no reason.
