Power - what do you do?

Mike, is the torus a regenerator in the same sense as the ps audio power plants? Torus "conditioner" has an input readout on the front panel display of less than 120v and output of 120v which suggest something similar to regeneration no?

It doesn't regenerate. Just condition/filter/isolate/regulate. I may put at passive UPS in front of it.

You're right. I spoke with Matt at Torus and he didn't suggest it either. So AVR20's and that's it.

Having worked through previous generations of PS Audio Powerplants, including P300 and PPP, I now use a P10 to power my system, itself fed from ring main via a Furukawa 2.6 cable, and feeding out to components via Furukawa 2.2 and various other cables. The P10 is set to high regulation and mode 6 Multiwave, and puts out a very steady 240V AC.

Dynamics are not robbed, just the opposite and benefits from the P10's high instantaneous current feed. The component which most benefits from regenerated power, surprisingly, is the Chord power amp with its switched mode power supply. Counter-intuitive, I know.

The benefits are startling dynamics, black noise floor, greater inner detail, lower harshness.

After days of reading- just ordered an Equitech 1.5 Model Q. I will also borrow an Audience T6-TSS to compare both technologies. Balanced power in my 200 unit new apt complex seemed the right first step as I cant run dedicated lines like my former condo. I just hate adding a 70lb box to my system, but will see.

Well scratch that- looks like I might become a Torus man. Dealing with Equitech is interesting to say the least...

+1. I have two of these on a UPS truck heading to my door. I have had very good success with these units.

Mike...I just added a ps audio P10 about a month ago, and it's worth it. Really happy with the result. It really cleaned my power and gives me more musical notes that I never heard before. It's all positive and you should give it a try.image.jpg

Very cool! I'll have to look into it.

Here's a before and after with my P10.

This is set in High Regulation, not Low Distortion mode.

Agreed! I couldn't get anyone from Equitech to even respond. Their website has not been fully functional for at least a few months as well.
I finally gave up and ordered a new 90A wall panel from Torus this week. Quick response, good technical feedback and they at least make you feel like they want your business.

Amen brother. Torus is leagues better in the customer service department. And I will now have voltage regulation as an added bonus in my AVR15 or 20 (they wanted a list of my equipment actually to tell me what to purchase).

Audience is the only other conditioner I want to try (and will borrow at some point after the AVR is burned in)

I use shielded cables everywhere, no exceptions. An unshielded power cable will radiate EM up to 200mm. Most probably into tethered & surrounding equipment. Great for the performance of your sensitive tube gear...NOT!

I've been known to offer colourful opinions to cable vendors for claiming that their unshielded cables are more open..."Just give them 800 hours or so to reach their full potential though". By then, a new model or generation in the name of Research & Development will be there to charm you onto the upgrade train. I find it interesting that "shielded" versions are being popularised again in recent months. Go figure.

The biggest power performance gains I have obtained have not been with power conditioners or dedicated lines. The biggest performance gains I have achieved have been through the use of inline passive power filtering on every component in the system. The results are cumulative. The product I use to scrub the ebb & flow...Furutech Flux 50 Inline Power Filter...from amps to source & anything else ancillary that is running off the same power circuits into your conditioner or regenerator hub(s).

Should you use these on networked or other passive electronic exotica welded into those fancy cables? YMMV. IMO, Furutech Flux 50 Inline Power Filters work best with a conventional shielded design that has good geometry & metallurgy. An honest cable.

I have a dedicated 20amp line and a Wywires Power Broker "Platinum Edition" power strip that does not offer any filtration. I am also using Cryoparts power cords with Bybee AC Bullets plugged into my JoB amp, W4spreamp and a Jenna Labs modified Oppo 95. My system has never been so quiet and has plenty of dynamics and a wonderful soundstage. The bass response has also greatly improved.

Frank, Did you receive your Torus wall panel? I am curious if you are pleased. Thanks,

After a lot of research and talking to a lot of folks in the industry - I'm circling the wagons and narrowing in on three of these (one for each amp and one for preamp/sources):

North American AVR Series | Torus Power

TORUS AVR 20 POWER CONDITIONER at Music Direct

Here is what I like about it:

* Power Regulation (a must for me here in Florida)
* The AVR20 (for a 20amp line, AVR15 for 15 amp line) can actually supply MORE power for brief periods than actually plugging the amps into the wall directly - therefore restricted dynamics do not come into play.
* Surge protection (a must for Florida)

....still reading and researching....but I'm narrowing in on this.

During my research, I found this site quite interesting: Ground One

Mike, I am also curious about whether you pulled the trigger on the AVR20's. If so, are you happy with the choice? As always, thank you very much for your insights.

Yes, it was installed over a month ago. Very pleased with it. Solved some severe electrical problems I'd been having for the better part of a year. Really the way to go if putting a dedicated panel in your home is possible. I'm still using a Shunyata Triton and Typhon for the front end and Typhons for each amp as well. Works well with the Torus.

I had Art Kelm, CEO of Ground One (Ground One), do an analysis and recommendation for my system. I ended up having him and an electrician install his Ground One Isolation Transformer, along with a 230V line from my panel and a new ground pole. It knocked the noise in my electrical system to near zero, totally inaudible. He doesn't have a lot of exotic stuff, just extremely well engineered equipment. Not cheap, but he comes out to do the work himself. He mostly does professional studios all around the country. He had just done Neil Young's studio when he came to do mine about 5 years ago. Go to his website and you can see the client list (we are somewhere in the middle of the list "Toy residence.")

Over the last 6 months I have introduced, in stages, Shunyata PC's as well as a Triton and Typhon. Already had 3 dedicated lines. I have become a believer. Every addition has been a major bump up, a major improvement, as good or better than a component upgrade. I am about to add two more Typhons, one for each amp, which are already each on their own dedicated circuit. I expect, based on the experience of other Shunyata users, that this too will be a major upgrade.
