Possibly the Strangest Thing in our Lifetime

While these are troubling times for a lot of people and industry, it also presents opportunity. Case in point, storage, crude oil storage and if you have the capability, it is gold right now. In my industry, railroading, we are currently experiencing the greatest demand for car storage ever. With multiple commodities outside of crude oil. For us it's a unique opportunity to make good revenue and not beat up our railroad.

Seattle got all up on themselves and started installing a 30 year, $80 Billion light rail. It was already a hot item as its projected usage was 3.5% of commuters. The CO2 offset was equal to spending $200 million on scrubbers on one aluminum plant. Now I wonder if it will ever be used. Commuters were on it, but so were a lot of disgusting sick people coughing and other gross stuff. Even if not used any more. Say ridership 1%, I'm sure Seattle will fully staff it until there its public outcry over the cost.

Im not a tree hugger but I am practical. We could have cleaned up 80 power plants for the cost of a light rail system that serves pretry much no one. That would have been real atmosphere cleaning. And the driverless car is very close. Corona killed pubic transit. Not just because of corona. Because our government is high on power. Don't doubt this wont happen again. Marahal Law is here to stay.

Exaggerate much? Marshall law has been invoked nowhere in the US.

Here you go. Sound like you need this.

I am just curious. Why do you think that would be the best that could happen.

Please don't just say we would have clean air because China will be back to being the worlds largest polluter with in a short time.

well, no planes=no pandemic

(you were right, i wanted to mention the clean air)

Lying, no. My Governor stood up on TV and said if you run a non essential business, out of your house or anywhere,
if you engage in work, we will fine you, revoke your licenses and or jail you if necessary.

Our governor has taken one of the main foundations of this country away from us. Life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. What do you think the pursuit of happiness is? What do you think when you're governor says we will jail you if you try and feed your family, if you try to create an income to live, to have an income to pay your mortgage, operate your life. What do you call it when they jail you for trying to survive.

Absolute semantics, martial law is not the correct word, but how far from it are we.

60 Minutes would have you believe the country is coming appart last weekend. Quoting world death rates, not USA. Special focus on NYNY hardships. Make it feel like NY woes are the country woes. My brother had a long term rental in his house. 2 nurses live in it. Local Tacoma WA hospital. 40 miles from Seattle. They are boored and may loose their jobs. Their hospital is going broke because no one is getting elective surgery. There were maybe 200 covid patients in tacoma.. Is 60 minutes lying about the state of the disease.

Have you done the math. 60,000 cases and 333 million people population. A fraction of 1% of people have contracted the disease. A fraction of 1%. Do the press tell this story every night. Is that a lie to withhold the information.

And what is all the hot talk today in the news. "Will we ever go back to normal". Will your government ever let you pursue "happiness": ever again. Or have they found the taste of controlling your life so satiafying, they wilk hold onto it. How long till Liberty is gone. "Stay At Home". How long till it's just Life. But hay, CCP doesn't even care about that. When do we fall that far.

Yes, this is one of the strangest in our lifetime.

I agree, to my mind this total lockdown is completely crazy. It will probably not help much against the virus in the end, but it can devastate many other things.

You do not get to put your own definition on Martial Law. That is defined in both our Constitution and I am sure in most if not all of our states Constitutions. Nowhere has the Military assumed the responsibility for running our Government(s) nor has privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus been suspended.

Another thing that I have not understood is this; when the lockdown one day is let up, the virus is still going to be there. It will not magically disappear. But the population have not gained any immunity during lockdown. So in the long run the lockdown will not help much (other than in gaining time for the hospitals to prepare, to put in place better security for the elderly and risk groups). This is unless anyone thinks it possible to have lockdown until a vaccine maybe arrives. We are probably talking about 12-18 month, and just maybe its not possible to make a vaccine. What willl 12-18 months of lockdown do to our societies? I am not seeing a good strategy at the moment, other than in Sweden that is.

i do call it a semi lockdown. helps and slows down the virus but get distributed more evenly through countries and the world....then if a second wave comes it burns everywhere.
unfortunately the plan was never to stop it, just slow it. it is becoming an endless story and many will prefere to catch it eventually rather than sitting home and get depressed, poor and fat.
5 weeks true lockdown, WUHANSTYLE, is the way to get rid of it.

I tried looking into why we have a Polio, MMR etc vaccine, but not AIDS or the flu. I am not sure how much this virus evolves. Apparently Seattle was hit with a Wuhan strain. NY was his with a Europe strain. Not sure if they are different enough that a single vaccine would work. I read there are 12 variations now. In short, there may never be a vaccine.

So then you ask, what's it going to take for the people to tell the government to shove it and go back to what we do. My dad lost a brother to Polio. My wifes mom has permanent disability due to Polio. That was arguably a much worse disease and everyone went about their lives.

It seem we have gotten use to such an amazingly easy and good life. We don't have the stomach and internal fortitude our parents and their parents and those before them did. Shoot, my mom literally had a pot to piss in and outhouse for heavy loads. One faucet was in the kitchen sink. Thats was it.. Now look at us. I have an outdoor shower with hot and cold to wash my dog.

FYI, everyone I know who got it didn't have much of an issue. 2 in their early 50s and 1 in her late 30s.
