Here in Northern CA it is fire season, and our power company has caused some major fires the last few years. Since they are being sued, and have declared bankruptcy due to those fires they are into overkill trying to not start anymore fires. So, at midnight they are shutting off power to quite a large area, and millions of people, for two days. I am right on the edge of the cutoff zone, and not sure if I will be affected or not. To be on the safe side I am listening to the stereo, and drinking beer tonight. :)

In the same boat.

True to form, PG&E cannot tell me if my power will be shut off or not.

I should add that my sister and her family lost their home in the Camp Fire in Paradise last year because PG&E CEO, Geisha Williams, decided NOT to turn the power off in Butte County last November 8 after PG&E issued 17 days of warning of pre-emptive outages.

Why Geisha Williams is not in prison for criminal negligence remains a mystery to me.

Stay safe all. We have been out of our home for a week because of the Decker Fire which is still burning near our Colorado home. Due to very hard work by 900 firefighters we will be able to return home tomorrow AM.

That is fantastic news Tom!

Thanks Mike. Reading between the lines in the USFS evacuee briefings I was thinking Friday, so this is great news. We are holed up at a friend’s house and so our situation has been pretty good. It will be nice to be home.

Yes, it is great you can soon return home. Although this is a subject for another thread, I suspect these fire issues are only going to get worse as the years go by.

Wow, I have not heard about any of this. I would think fire season was behind us by a month or so. I know lots of the country is still hot, but mainly East/South East

And shutting off power?

Wonderful news and stay safe. I have some small sense of what that's like from helping my sister and her family from the loss of their home in the Camp Fire.

The fire season in NorCal is October and November.

I did not know that, I remember a few years ago we were getting smoke from CA, OR and BC, plus our contribution in WA - it wasn’t Beijing, but very unbearable

If you think Beijing is bad, try Shanghai some time...whoa.

Thanks everyone for your kind wishes. It will be great to be back home.

I really feel for all my friends in California. Love or hate PG&E they are in a no win situation. The PUC and public won’t let them build infrastructure and while they are really focused on conservation the existing grid infrastructure cannot handle peak demand so critical infrastructure is breaking.

Be safe on the west coast. Unfortunate challenges with drought, fires and now power to prevent more fires.

Well, the power went out where I live in Five Canyons in Castro Valley last night, right before midnight. Its still off, 15 hours later and we have virtually no idea when it will go back on. The irony here is the power was shut off for predicted high winds (putting PG&E's crumbling infrastructure at potential risk for a downed power line) and...there is virtually no wind. Wind maps show a wind presently of up to...2 mph.

After the devastating Tubbs and Atlas fires that ravaged Sonoma and Napa Counties in 2017 and the Camp Fire that devastated Paradise (and burned my sister's home to the ground) in November 2018, PG&E has "hardened" only 100 miles of power lines and towers in 10 months. They had a target of a whopping 150 miles for 2019. And they have...24,000 miles of lines and towers across California. At this rate it will take them....~160-200 years to complete this work.

Meanwhile, PG&E plans to pay top excecutives $11,000,000 in...bonuses this year.

Mine never went off, but around me it did. I think it is coming back on now. At least that is what I am reading on Nextdoor.

I suspect this is part of a PG&E strategy to get legislation that exempts them from any damages due to electrical caused fires. Inconvenience enough people, and it might work.

Hang in there guys. Not a good situation.

in addition to the impact to homes, I wonder about the impact to the wine country. It is harvest time and power is critical for the vineyards to crush and process the fruit.

Just ask CA Governor Gavin Newsome about that. He’s not at all happy that the power to his wineries has been turned off.
