when were the changes instituted? glad your friend got a great speaker in the end.

like you, i was amazed how many folks in the press thought these were great speakers 6 months ago.

I will say one more thing- at the 60k level, its much less forgivable. clearly means people are chasing the uber-high end $ with major design flaws- that's fairly unacceptable to me.

Just a couple of quick points here, and I'm out.

The first pair of speakers delivered were PROTOTYPES for the new X design. The flaws that were discovered were not related to the overall design, but were the result of a problem with that SPECIFIC PAIR of loudspeakers. The new pair that were delivered are representative of new production, and have drivers which did NOT EXIST at the time the original pair were built.

There are a number of the original systems in the field, and they were well received, with no problems to my knowledge reported by the owners or others who have auditioned the systems into which they have been installed.

Audio Doctor in Jersey City has the very latest version of the MKX-S and they are even better then and the pair your friend has, several changes were made and the design is now finalized.

Polymer revamped the woofers which now provide even deeper and tighter bass and the internal wiring, from Enklein has been upgraded. The speaker now features proprietary shielding technology also from Enklein.

All I can say is WOW! These speakers are in a class by themselves. I would take them over any of the current crop of reference speakers.

But you're not biased are you? ;)

The latest version my friend has is at least listenable now better than the abortion that was the first version. But even with these, the bass becomes muddy and uncontrolled at higher SPL's and there is definitely a low frequency roll off - much higher than should be for a speaker at this price point IMO.

They are also such tiny speakers with cabinets that look like a high school shop project gone wrong. I just can't get over that. The tweeter sounds excellent, but some who have heard them commented that it sounds unnatural. I don't agree.

For $60,000, just not a fan....but, I haven't heard the fixed, latest, refixed, modified, tweaked, fixed again version.
