One of my readers wrote this in response to my post The gift of music.

“My daughter is 16 and part of the MP3 generation. *I am trying, and gave her 16 CDs for Christmas, all of her favorite music. *She promptly loaded them on to her phone. *Yet when I play them on my system she is captivated, but not enough to overcome the convenience of having the music on her phone. *I fear that we are fighting to losing rear-guard action, but I will go down fighting.”

Bravo and don’t give up. *It is not a losing rear-guard action at all. *16 year olds are in a hurry. *16 year olds don’t have time for anything other than figuring out where they fit in. *But they are hungry for what we give them. *They will need it later. *By exposing the daughter to new music and captivating her interests in better sound, if only for a moment, plants a seed that will blossom in its time.

Like Johnny Appleseed, we Audiophiles need to plant as many seeds as we can and then nurture those seeds if possible. *But even without nurturing, planted seeds will many times grow into wonderful new trees.

Take heart. *When the daughter is in her thirties and gets another opportunity to appreciate the better performance of a great system it will be as if a lightbulb turned on in her head.

Planting a new seed is the only way a tree grows. *But it takes patience, love and nurturing. *You’re giving her both.

With ever-increasing prices, size, complexity, and false pretenses (marketing hype), I don't expect a migration to audiophile grade gear by the great majority of today's and tomorrow's young.

A popular gift for several of my young grandsons this year was the new Pebble Smart Watch. Now they can listen to their music, check mail, etc., when it is not convenient to have their smart phone available, e.g., exercising. Sadly not one of them requested a McIntosh audio component or PMC speaker like their Grandad has.

The friends we frequent at college have a bigger influence (seed) on us than anyone else, I think.
At home too, just different.

* A turntable is magic; it was and still is. :)

I still have three Mark. ...All unplugged and boxed in the basement. ...Tons of albums too.
Cheap TTs; a vintage Pioneer classic (semi-auto belt drive) with an AT cart, a Sony linear drive, also with an AT cart, and an old Akai fully-automatic (stroboscopic zombie) TT without a stylus.

Life's just too short to do everything with true patience and dedication (I must have sixteen CD/SACD/Blu-ray players connected right now)!

* It would be no problem at all for me to get a nice VIP (VPI) TT or Thorens, or Clearaudio, or Oracle with a very good cart too Mark; it's just that I don't have the right music material (quality recordings) to put on them turntables.
And I know me; I'm a music software guy, and that's where it's going to cost me deeply.
You know what I'm saying; my LP collection right now is just older records, many in perfect condition, but simply music material I don't listen much anymore (Rock, Progressive, New Age from yesteryear, and some Blues, some Jazz, some Classical, ...), but not quality recordings like some you pay more for. ...I went the digital way in my later years Mark, and with it I embarked on the SACD music niche, and the CD digital quality record labels of the world.
I simply made a choice at a certain point in my lifestyle, and I invested mucho dineros, and still do (Blu-rays).

What some people spend on audio gear, I spend on music software.
And what some people spend on cables, I spend on food.

And I'm as much a multichannel audio guy (4-D) as the next stereo 3-D guy sitting next to me.
