Oppo UDP-205

Per OPPO, Within the OPPO 205 the MedaiTek decoder (quad core ARM Soc) is doing the full unfolding. The Dac (es9038 Pro) is optimizing the decoded MQA audio and then coverts it to analog.

Thanks Chris, for going through the hassle of inquiring with Oppo.

In my mind that makes the Oppo a good candidate to buy just for trying MQA. I am not using that sort of players much anymore, as everything is online nowadays, but great to have options.

Well as a universal player, mine is supporting my HT setup but having MQA allows for a nice one box solution that works very well. I can only imagine what a Modwright mod would do for the sound
Modwright mod:

  • Tube mod for UDP-205 will be the same circuit as for the Oppo Sonica DAC. Lundahl transformer input and output coupled, fully balanced, with RCA and XLR fully balanced outs.
  • PS 9.0 (V10) external supply included in the mod. This is different than the PS 9.0 (V9.9) that was used for the Oppo 105. Different voltage and only tube rectified, not tube regulated. NOTE: OLDER PS 9.0 supplies (V9.0 and V9.9 versions) WILL NOT work with this mod.
  • Truth umbilical will be included (all copper conductors, no silver). Any existing truth mod umbilical will work with this new mod.
  • IEC upgraded to Furutech.
  • Mod will include damping mods to enclosure and drive.
OF course you provide the 205 and then provide another $2500

I have not yet tried full MQA with the Oppo, but probably will soon (currently leaving on a vacation). I’ll need to rejoin Tidal to do that.

I like the sound of the Modwright mod quite a bit. I also have the 105 mod, and the 205 mod is a large step up from that
