Oppo UDP-203 on the way to compliment new Sony 4K television

Jim.......I have already been receiving ads from Sony about the newest television where the screen is the speaker. I'm not sure what to think about it. My initial skeptical reaction is less than positive.
 
If you guys are referring to the Sony A1E OLED, rtings said "The A1E's sound is much better than the average TV" and scored very high. There is also a CNET review that says it sounds better than Samsung Q7.

screen speakers work great!!!

I've owned the 65" Sony A1E OLED for 4-5 months, and appreciate it does sound pretty good without any extra speakers. I use it for football mostly, but also have watched quite a bit of 4K content and I have not missed any sonic performance.

I have the A1E upstairs in my barn (my 2 channel room is downstairs). in the main house I have a full fledged home theatre with 110" diag 2:35-1 screen, and a 4k FP Sony projector, and 7.1 system. I've watched 2 movies in there in the last year. so the A1E is scratching the 4k itch and is a great looking TV for all types of content and i'm very satisfied.

I do use the Oppo UDP-203 with the AE1 for my 4k content. my wife and I have watched Planet Earth II twice all discs on this set-up. it's astonishing.

I have the MSB Select II for my digital music listening in my 2-channel room so I cannot say how the Oppo is for music only.
 
I wish the TV manufacturers would offer monitor only versions with no tuner or audio. Just concentrate on the picture.
 
Hi Dan, I did some homework today about " burn in" and life expectancy on the OLEDs. As you know, the Sony OLEDs use LG screens. The article mentioned that LG expects the normal life of the screens to be 100,000 hours. The same as the LEDs and LCDs.
I'm comforted about that. I also spoke with a good friend of mine who worked for Sony for over 20 years. I mentioned my concern about the screen speaker. He said Sony is WAY over the top about testing new products, and he has been to a testing facility. Knowing him for many years, I expected a very conservative response. He said, "don't think twice about it, if they make it, it's been tested ad nauseam. The burn in issue seems to be very manageable. The article advises, " after any burn in, operate the TV as normal, turn it on and off etc and it will go away". I'm hypnotized by the Sony OLED 65". I'm going in as soon as the 2018 comes out. I'll let you know!

I understand your point, but there is no guarantee that doing so would enhance video performance. I imagine most, if not all, manufacturers would simply remove the audio and tuner features with no changes to the video technology and features.
