Hi All,

I have an old Onkyo Integra CP-1055F turntable with an Audio-Technica AT20SLa cartridge that I bought new back in the day. It has pretty much been stored in the box for the past 15 years or so. With the resurgence of vinyl in the recent past, I took it out and hooked it up recently, only to find out that it seems the damping fluid has dried up. The table works normally, other than I cannot use the Play/Reject, Cueing, and Search buttons/functions. Also, when it gets to the end of playing a record, it won't lift and return the tonearm. Manual manipulation of the tonearm works perfectly.

Anyone have any suggested/recommended service locations, preferably in the New England area? I would like to get it fixed, or would it be better to just purchase a new unit?

Thanks in advance,

C

That was a pretty good TT in it's day and well worth fixing unless the electronic circuits are bad. If you don't still have them here is a link to the owners and service manuals. You will have to join the forum to download. For the damping fluid you can try removing the lifter platform and adding silicone from the top, but chances are is will have to go in from the bottom after you clean out the old dried up silicone.

Thanks Jack,

I have the service manual already. I was thinking about doing it myself, but I figured I would check with folks here for a TT service center and have them go over the entire unit.

As to the auto functions if you haven't tried it, I would spray them with Deoxit and work them vigorously in case the switches have just oxidized from lack of use. Won't hurt anything as it will evaporate. Try it from the top first it may work for the switches and the silicone. Otherwise no harm no foul. Otherwise you can just take the bottom off for a look see to see how complicated it looks. I have bought a couple of JVC's with electronic controls on top like that which benefited from a little Deoxit when they became intermittingly stubborn. Might have better luck on vintage gear repairmen the TT forum at Audiokarma if you are member. If not join. Lot of New England TT people on there.

Thanks again Jack.

The buttons themselves work, it's the actual lifting mechanism of the tonearm. I can hear the motor turning, but the arm doesn't raise, and the motor shuts off after a few secs (probably some form of overheat sensor).

I will check AK as well.

Cheers,

C

Does that motor have a belt with it to the Tonearm? I have a similar Sanyo Q50 with a separate motor for the tonearm and it is belt driven. May have dry rotted. If the silicone has dried up and hardened it would keep the lifter fro from moving. I bought a Technics a couple of years ago that the silicone was so gummed up in that the tonearm lift would not work. Had to clean is out with isopropyl and then reapply.
