Nothing like a good cable discussion....

+1 for Triode Wire Labs. I use the interconnects and speaker cables in my 2nd system. Detailed. Smooth. Musical. Great value.

So, a couple of votes for Triode Wire Labs here.

American Speaker Cable, Spirit II interconnect and Obsession power I guess?

Really? That is what I expect from a cable, and felt that was what Shunyata did. Just pass the signal undistorted from source to sink. Personally, I think it is STUPID to use cables as tone controls, but that’s just me.

Actually I think it would be stupid to purchase a cable that doesn't do anything. I don't purchase any component that doesn't do something that gets me closer to what I want to hear. Cables are no different.

All cables are tone controls, otherwise they would all sound the same and we would all own the same cables. It’s just like those companies that claim their cables are have no sound characteristic, well, if that’s the case, why have so many different models?

Take a breath, tuning your system with cables is ok. It’s no different than tailoring your sound with room treatments, tubes or solid state, digital or vinyl.

...Honest quality built cables at "reasonable" prices.

+1... we all have our different perspectives here: systems, desired sound, budget, etc.

very high quality conductor wire with proven cable geometry (twisted pair, quad star) and quality build are what work best for me. such cables can indeed be had at reasonable prices. for me its a 100% of the performance at 10% of the price type thing... however, as they say, YMMV

...truth speaker ;-)

for example, some folks prefer cables using silver conductor wire, others prefer copper conductors or even tinned-copper conductors. each has its own sonic characteristics.

I mostly agree Mike. They do all sound different and do that differently in different systems. So in that they are certainly the last fine tuning of a system. I think its just semantics in my non agreement.

But, what I think of a "tone control" cable is one that has definite frequencies that have a boost or rolloff or dip. Then you have the more neutral cables (most out there) that have different sound staging, or smoothness or edginess or etc. For example - for systems that use Raidho speakers, using a cable that boosts the bass is a no go - you have to have a cable that rolls off the bass or better yet a cable that has a designed dip. This is more than fine tuning - its a true tone control to fix an known issue.

Jim, if you mean 'doesn't do anything other than carry / convey the signal from one component to another', I couldn't disagree more.

I don't purchase any component that doesn't do something that gets me closer to what I want to hear. Cables are no different.

I understand with respect to components, but speaker wire, IC's , (unless the overpriced stuff from MIT) I don't consider as such. I want my cabling as neutral as possible.

Cables and power cords are no different than any other piece of gear in my setup. I expect every piece of gear to get me closer to what I want to hear. I A/B everything in my set-up (except for the X2'as which would have been impossible). The piece of gear/cable that gets me closer to what I want to hear gets to stay. There are products I will probably never ask to audition in my home set-up because they cross the price line I have drawn in the sand. Examples would be MBL Xremes, the MSB Select II, Transparent Magnum Opus. If a cable doesn't improve the sound it won't stay.

All cables distort the signal in some manner. All I want is a cable that distorts the signal less than other cables. To me, it doesn't make any sense to have to change cables because you acquired a new piece of gear. Yet, if you use cables to 'tune' your system then you have to try/get new cables with new gear.

THIS! Couldn’t agree more.

However, having said this, sometimes I end up buying a piece of equipment that has a coloration that I only become aware of over time, and want to “fix”. Sometimes it’s easier (and less expensive) to buy a different cable rather than new component. But it irritates me that I have to buy a cable as a “bandaid” kind of fix when the component is the real problem.
