New Levinson 5805

I bought a new Mark Levinson integrated amp, the 5805. In the past month I have bought and sold a Marantz PM-KI Ruby and then a PM-10 which I returned. I also bought Krell K-300i but cancelled the order due to Krell being out of business for now. This week I bought the 5805.

Wow, what a difference. It is musical, transparent, has great bass slam although the bass can be a little overwhelming with the arendal speakers that I recently bought. I am probably going to have to plug the ports in the back. It has great clarity, detail and resolution. The midrange is musical, tonally rich and the lower midrange and below has some warmth. The treble is so smooth and non fatiguing, I could listen to this integrated for hours. It is a definite keeper. It has more detail and slam than my Pass X250.

It's great you like the ML 5805.

This amp was a consideration when I decided to move away from SETs for my Avantgarde speakers, although I'd have gone for its digital-only brother, the 5802, as the latter offers more digital features in place of the analogue ones in the 5805 - and it's appreciably less costly!

5 years ago, I bought a number of amps (new or used) and borrowed a few demo ones from dealers, including the 5805, and all were in my system at home for between a week and a year or longer. These were power amps, integrateds and all-in-ones.

The ML was amongst my favourites in this group of £4-8K options. Also great were the GamuT D200 Mk III (bought used), the Accuphase A-36 (bought used) and the NAD M33 (dealer demo), and this NAD was the one that I decided to buy. All these 4 amps sounded great, and I'd have been happy with any, although the GamuT let itself down by its bad manners (it sent a massive thump to my 102 dB speakers when powered up or down) and the Accuphase (probably the finest in build and design), was a little too "polite". After extensive listening tests, the M33 won me over as its sound quality was superb, it offer all the features I wanted and it included streamer and DAC elements, meaning that I need only a single box of electronics - and no cables! That was 5 years ago and I'm still very content, even after upgrading my speakers to Duo XDs.

I'd have been equally happy with the 5802 plus a streamer, although the higher cost would have delayed my speaker upgrade by a year or two! I'm sure you'll love the 5805.
