Need some advice on adding a sub....

I'm currently running a Peachtree Audio Nova300, with KEF R300s as my mains. The mids and high are fantastic but it could definitely use a little low end to fill out some of the lower octaves. I'm looking for a sub to compliment my current set up and not over power it. Was just planning on getting the matching KEF R400b, but have not heard great reviews and I have read it's more of a home theater sub. I would like to keep it under $1,500 and any advice is much appreciated....
 
I would look at a Rhythmik servo non ported sub. SVS makes some nice subs as do REL, JL Fathom and Martin Logan. But for the money, I would get a Rythmik servo sub with PEQ.

The SB-2000 subs are great budget subs and perform way above their price point. Very musical and fast bass.
 
Home Theater Review recently did an article where all the writers put together a $5k or less system, it was interesting several of them used an SVS sub that costs about $550.00. I've have one of their large subs and like it quite a bit, bested my former Velodyne by a good margin. Sorry, I can't remember the exact model at $550.00. SVS allows return if not happy. SVS is reasonably priced, don't let that fool you, it's a lot of sub.

In addition, I hear good things about the Martin Logan Dynamo subs.
 
Mr. P. The SVS SB-1000 is in that price range. It is a 10" non ported and it sounds great. Very musical and fast. It is the smaller version of the SB-2000. The Rythmik is better though.

I use 2 original Dynamo subs and they integrate seamlessly with my Magnepans. You can't go any lower than the Dynamo 700. The 500 and lower are cheap junk. You need to step up to the 1000 and 1500 to get good bass below 27hz though. They do produce very fast and controlled bass.

I am a big fan of the Rythmik subs and use a pair of F12SE's in my main system, but for matching with the KEF's you might want to look at the F8 which uses dual 8" woofers.

For your price point, you could actually add 2 SVS SB2000 subs. I've done a few systems with dual sb2000's and really like them quite a bit (I keep a pair here for demos as well). Or save a few bucks and do 2 SB1000's. The SVS units are really quite good, and a crazy value.
 
Yes, 2 subs are the way to go if you have the space. 2 SVS SB-1000 or SB-2000's would be a nice way to go. Even 2 Martin Logan Dynamo 700's which have a very small foot print if WAF is important.

But if I had to pick one sub it would be the Rhythmic F12se. It has a lot of versatility with the built in PEQ.
 
Recently added two SB-2000 subs to compliment my old JBL L80t mains. The company recommended sealed subs for music, ported for HT, and space was a bit of an issue so I went with sealed. Made a significant improvement to the music content and then I dialed up Jurassic Park and, HOLY CRAP! Sounded like I had dinosaurs walking upstairs. They were a crazy good value and I even got a t-shirt!
