I just sold a pair of planars that just couldn't give me a good soundstage, especially depth, in my room. Please let me know your impressions of Golden Ear Triton 1s (not one mention in AudioShark yet), Chapman T-5s, and Usher Diamond Mini Dancer 2s. I value a great soundstage, big and quick dynamic swings, play loud without glare/strain, make a drum kit and organ pedals pressurize a room, and present vocals naturally. I've heard the Triton 1s and Chapman T-5s and they are top contenders, never heard the Ushers but I'm getting good recomendations.
Aside from these 3, let me know others at $5K/pr I should audition before I make a decision.

I really like the Golden Ears. Sandy is a brilliant designer.

As for others, I only heard the bookshelf Scansonic's at RMAF, but rumor is that the floor stander Scansonic 3.5's are amazingly good for $5k MSRP. I know Mark (MDP) recently auditioned a pair. Hopefully he will chime in.

I would also recommend the Revel F206 (MSRP $3,500) and Revel F208 (MSRP $5,000). They are amongst the best in class at this price range and offer performance equivalent to speakers which cost thousands of dollars more.

Great suggestion Ken. F208 is outstanding. I have a friend selling his pair as he's going to a stand mount speaker due to room constraints. If you're interested, PM me and I will give you his info.

Unless you are in a hurry you might want to wait on the reviews of the Triton 5 which is strictly passive before you commit to the 1's with the built in subwoofers. They have a fixed crossover point of 150 hz which may not work in all rooms. The passive Triton 5 is less than half the price and has a -3 point of 26 hz without subs. I should have a pair in house in the next week or so. I will know if they need subs or not pretty quickly. Another speaker to consider at under $5k is the Odyssey Kismet BR at $3900. or the Lorelei at $2900. The Odyssey speakers which are clones of Symphonic Line speakers that sell for over three times the cost in Germany.

Thanks Mike. I've listened to the F208 a lot at my local dealer and I actually preferred them to the Aerial 7T (MSRP $9,850). The build quality of the F208 is absolutely superb.

Thanks for your replies. I heard the Scansonics at 2014 RMAF, impressive, never heard the Revels, I should audition the Triton 5s before I choose.

You're welcome. The F208's deliver robust and punchy bass, sweet mids and ultra smooth treble. No weaknesses in my opinion.

So, no Usher or Chapman experience?

I've heard the Ushers twice at shows (Bruce Brown has demo'ed with them) and they have sounded excellent both times. I've heard Chapman's more expensive speakers (the ones that go for about $10k/pr) which also sounded very good (better than the Ushers but at about twice the price). I've never heard the Tritons.

I think Zu Soul Supremes are the best < $5k speakers I've heard- I really want to hear the Goldens though. The buzz is high on them.

do they have to be 'new' $5k will buy you a lot of used speaker. Iv'e seen Revel Salon2s for ~5k, they may have been blemished a little but still...I've also seen Sonus Faber Amati Futuras under 6k - another great speaker.

I wish I could find Salon2's for as little as 5K,the ones I have found that had a few blems on the cabinet were still going for 9k -12k

I've never heard the large Usher speakers but I do like my Usher BE-718's.

The GE 1's I have heard as I have the GE2's in my TV viewing area. The GE1's get an improvement in the bass, the mids and high are still pretty sweet (for the money) The Revel F208 playing next to the GE1's in the store in Daytona, hard to say. The GE1 had more bass, but a sub with the F208's made that an equal. I like the tweeter in the GE's.

Thanks to all for chiming in; no they don't have to be new, yes I'd buy a pair of Salon2s for $5K, Triton 1s pull into the lead.

Amati Futuras for $6k? Don't they list for $36k? Seems like excessive depreciation?

the amati came in a homage anniversario and futura, maybe someone can school us on the differences. these were probably an early pair.

when sumiko handled the dist. their pricing was relatively sane, since then they've gone through a number of increases.
