Well I did ask him about their return policy, so that is probably the case. You are probably right, the STP-SE is a nice sounding unit. I drive myself crazy always trying to get improvements, which are not always 100% pure sound quality reasons. Sometimes design features, etc. I will probably eventually end up with a McIntosh pre-amplifier again (had several back in the day) for no real reason than that I literally grew up in the shadow on their factory. So Mc holds a place in my heart.
 
A Mc tube preamp would be a good thing, but I would still keep my DAC separate. Also that other unit I was telling you about is very promising even with the stock Chinese tubes at about 30 hours continuous. I will swap in some NOS tubes tomorrow and see how it improves. Think you would like it.
 
Nice.... eventually I might tubes.... but I have been very hesitant about trying tube stuff...

I'm pleased with mine. Great OLED display, full featured. MQA decoding is a blast. All for under $2K. Great value in my book...
