Your set up plays nicely with their near field BBC heritage thou

And yes, they do pair well with the Snappers, especially since I added a Croft Micro 25R pre. But 30w of Unison S6 also sounds great, the Harbeths seem to have a knack of bringing the best out of an amp. And after a year I still find myself wondering just how so much top quality bass emerges from those tiny boxes
Yes that is true Matt. For sure this is a near field system. Could be in a BBC van. And yes, surprisingly, it sounds "real". I get connected to the music.
Their bass is superb, but as always with Harbeth, the mids are the most natural ones I ever heard. All the spectrum is fabulous, but voices are the easiest thing to analyze and qualify as "natural" or not.
Those BBC guys really know how to make speakers.
I have noted with the big 40.1 this ability to shine "no matter" the amp.
I think that Harbeth designs speakers of such a high quality, that yes, amplification really becomes in a way " secondary ".
While many other speakers do not have this coherence and naturalness, we keep searching always for the "best amp", without realizing that we are indeed trying to compensate for a problem of some kind of the speaker.
Now I know what Alan Shaw means when he says " No matter the amp. Any one decently well made will do the job ".
He does not express himself in a standard way though. He is very "basics". I guess only owners really understand what he means.
What is surprising in my home is that the 40.1 really shine with 3 different amps. I can hear very clearly the differences between the amps. I could spot then after 10 seconds of music in a blind test. But they almost all give me the same joy of listening.
So they are both very revealing of the upfront components, and very forgiving. Really contradictory qualities but that is precisely what we hear.
The only exception being that after 2 hours of music played through my SS amp ( 2205 ), I do not have the same "excitement" to continue for hours. I loose a few degrees of excitement with time.
Tube amps do not produce this feeling. I can listen to them all day without any loss of excitement.
