My First Console

Yes I've heard of the stupidpimple disease, but haven't dealt with it before. They wisely left it out of my other Dual, a CS-5000 I bought new. I'm thinking about sending the 1019 off to fixmydual for a complete freshening. We'll see. If I decide to ascend the learning curve I'll build a work stand for the 1019. I almost 'spilled' TD125 using cans. Scary business, that heavy beast could have left a nasty dent in my workbench :)

The speakers sound pretty good for what they are and what they're in at low levels. First I'm going to try them with a better amp just to make sure the flab is in the speakers. Then I'm going to deoxit their pots and play with dampening and porting to see if they'll tighten up in the bass department. Should be fun.

My friend gave me his recently passed away dad's Heathkit console. I hooked it all up and it works after sitting unused for 20 years! Doesn't sound half bad actually. I cycled the 1019 through by hand and no binding so I gave it a try too. It works, maybe too well, as it won't shut off. I can't find much on the Knight 830HC speakers. I'm guessing that may mean 8 ohms / 30 watts. I found one reference that they were made by Jensen.

John...beautiful and classic.

Update - I deox'd the treble pots leaving them on full and added 1 1/2 lbs of hollofil to each speaker cabinet leaving the untuned ports open for now. I replaced the speaker wire with "TOTL" 16/2 speaker wire from OSH. The bass did improve but didn't get any time to play with it much. I also replaced the metal floor glides with non-marring plastic glides to save the skid marks on the flooring.

Good one! I was the 1st one on my block to get a 2600 when it came in. Ditto on the the NES too.

OK back on topic - What is the "Phase" dial on the Tuner supposed to do? It doesn't seem to do anything?

Making progress. Since the last post I sent the Dual 1019 out and it arrived today fresh from it's overhaul. While it was away I made a nice new mounting board. I had just enough 1/4" shop made old growth walnut veneer offcuts for it. Next step will be to do something with the speakers as one of the horn tweeters is dead. After that maybe a period correct amp/receiver upgrade. Here's some pics:

Thanks, it's been fun so far. It's sort of a cross between a rack and a console. Very flexible. I'm thinking the lower left would take a RTR or records. I'm curious about the lower right, rear facing section's purpose. I was thinking an amp (ugly one?) but I doubt remote trigger circuits war common enough for that back then. Ideas?

Today was TLC time. Let the Howard's Restore-A-Finish do it's special magic and took some better pics with natural light and tripod. Hope you like, I sure do. I never thought I'd be a console guy, but here I am.
