MQA Takes Off at CES 2016

Yes several files are available for download on the 2L site. Unfortunately even the Meridian gear has not been updated to play the tracks. Not sure if any of the other vendors are making their products available now.

Say what? Meridian gear can't playback MQA files??

Yes. I heard several songs. Elvis, Frank Sinatra and others. I thought it sounded very good. Would definitely like to hear again - on something but Meridian speakers though!

Mike , like you I have only heard MQA on Meridian speakers in a less than optimum environment. I left with mixed feeling but optimistic. One hand a couple of the tracks were the best recordings I have ever heard. At the same time the majority were very good but no better than what I have heard from other set-ups.

My hope is that instead of worrying about going back and working on old recordings the record labels will release most new releases using the MQA technology.

The short answer is no, you will not get the "full" benefit of MQA until the push a firmware update out and then only on a couple of pieces. Most of us will have to have our gear updated.

I agree Jim. I just don't know how many more copies of Kind of Blue I need. [emoji6]

If I see major artists like Adele releasing things in MQA, then I'll know it's taking off.

Keep in mind that Meridian does not give two hoots about the audiophiles. They want this to be a format as widely accepted as MP3 was in the 90's.

FW refers to firmware, which is effectively the software operating system of a component. Some components will get a FW update to add MQA support.

Meridian has had their MQA DACs on the market for awhile. Are you saying they won't play back the MQA files that 2L has available until a firmware update comes out?

Seriously? If what you are saying is true, that would mean that Meridian also doesn't give a hoot about sound quality which is the reason d'etre for MQA supposedly. They reach back in time to the original recording and correct all of the digital problems with the original digital gear used to make the recordings and a little green light comes on to let you know your recording has been authenticated by some recording artists/engineers who made the original recordings even though some of them are now dead (I guess MQA can reach back all the way to the grave). And Meridian doesn't care about audiophiles? As for MP3s, they are still widely accepted by people who don't know better, can't hear better, or just don't give a damn. I thought MQA was shooting for the stars and was better than hi-rez according to the Meridian marketing info. Maybe Elvis can go back to sleep now or he can quit bagging groceries at the Piggly Wiggly where he has been spotted on numerous occasions. :D
