MQA now on Tidal

Are you guys noticing a lot of duplicate albums showing up on Tidal? One is redbook, one is MQA?

The original version of this article is here, dated exactly one month before the blog post:
https://forums.linn.co.uk/bb/showthread.php?tid=35624

The (new) blog version removes the sentence "This isn’t an official Linn company position, just my opinion, so please take it as that." (Edit: Yes, that became official: https://forums.linn.co.uk/bb/showthread.php?tid=35624&pid=425650#pid425650 )

So we have another manufacturer on the anti-MQA side.

Pretty crazy but when I search Neil Young on an N10 I get a totally different mix of albums and order of them vs. what your screen shows. I have not found any of the NY albums to be MQA. How are you telling that one copy is MQA? I tried it on the desktop app and none of them showed MQA. Tell me one that you know is MQA so I can try it....thx

I don't know if one is MQA and the other is just rebook, I was just wondering why multiple copies showed up. So odd.

Mike, Tidal has not removed the non MQA versions from their site so you will have both listings. I play an track from one of the albums to see if it is the MQA version or not. Then pick the one that is. I think we will be living with this for awhile.

Mike

As far as I know there are no Neil Young albums on Tidal in MQA. One thing they do that is a pain is that they list each version/release of the title separately for both standard and remaster. Some frequently reissued or remastered titles are on there many times more than needed. Some of the CSN titles are MQA.

I checked and none of those NY albums are MQA'd or at least the 10 that I checked were not.

Seeing the same from Lumin app. Checked a few albums - none are MQA. (Tidal MQA music must be 24-bit, not 16-bit.)

Hi Peter,

I am hardware decoding on an MQA dac. I get 16/192K or sometimes 24/48K readings or 24/88K, depends on the original recording. Maybe I don't understand but I thought 16 bit/192K could be an MQA file???

Tidal MQA music is always delivered in 24/48 or 24/44.1 format (non-Tidal MQA music can be different, but that's another story). With a MQA DAC, that can be decoded to higher sampling rates. I'm not aware that it can become 16/192 instead of 24/192, but if you did see 16/192 when playing Tidal, I guess that's possible. When you see 16/192 from Tidal again, please let me know which album shows it. Thanks.

The Associations Greatest Hits, 16/192
Steely Dan, Two against nature 24/96
Duke Ellington Afro-Bossa 16/192
Jason Derulo Talk Dirty 24/44

These are all streaming through an Aurender N10 into a MSB Select DAC II with the MQA/USB module. This is what I get on the MSB display.

I checked several Neil Young albums at the Tidal API level and can confirm the duplicates have different Tidal ID, and a few tracks like "A Letter Home Intro" even have different durations. So I believe Jack is correct.

For those using Lumin app, there should now be a Masters category under Tidal. If you don't see it, please kill the app and retry tomorrow.

Double click the home button and swipe up to close apps running in background.

I still see no 'Masters' category..does it make any difference if i already have created a Masters folder within my 'playlists'?
