MQA - more info...sort of

a useful data point for sure. encouraging. I must admit that Stuart's prior PCM'ness and my listening experiences over the last decade to his products and approach did sour me to the likelihood of MQA ever being of value to me.

now it appears to maybe be a step forward....a good thing for all of us.

next we need a known person in a home system where the chain of gear and software is known. these reported perceptions are still in a Meridian controlled environment.

and then a native MQA recording compared to a Quad dsd native recording comparison to see where the best MQA approach ranks next to optimal digital in 2016.
 
I'm trying to understand MQA so please be patient with me. What I'm getting is that music is first encoded with the MQA technology. So this must be done with the master recording in order to take full advantage... it can't be from a 16/44 CD, right? And then you'll need a decoder to play it back. Is this a separate decoder or can it be built into a DAC? Let me know if I'm not getting it. Thanks!

Reminds me of the Dolby process, it encodes the music (on cassette) and the hardware decodes the music, less the noise. Different name with MQA, same closed end to end process. Anyone use Dolby today?

My main concern is the two way communication required between the MQA source and the DAC. I don't see the world turning over just yet to make this happen, this would mean error correction, and correct timing, of which NO ONE HAS EVER implemented for USB or S/PDIF digital audio. I'm not going to trash my DAC by jumping on the rickety bandwagon, with the fourth wheel driven by spin.

Where is the response from the major labels and the super distributor Apple?
 
Just jumped on DSD a couple years back, along with what was out there before. If the sound is not significantly better, I'm not even considering it. File size is not really relevant to me in local playback and Tidal does CD quality, which is good enough as my Meitner upsamples the stream to 2x DSD.

For real enjoyment it must anyhow be locally stored DSD or even better, black gold.

What makes me hesitate in all this discussion, is that while any Meridian equipment I have heard in the past 6-7 years, has been - pardon my bluntness - rather average in performance, how on earth would they suddenly be able to turn junk into gold?

Long story short, I don't believe it before I hear it in an environment I control end-to-end. I'm afraid so far it's a bit like a Marshall stack from behind at a rock concert.
