MQA Discussion

Today was Van the Man's birthday.

A Tidal search brings up 53 albums, but only 7 MQA files.

Unfortunately, the site is obviously geared toward crap like Jay-Z.

You know that Jay-Z purchased Tidal in 2015 right?

No wonder it's loaded with so much crap and poorly supported network connections.

Nice to try MQA, but I'll be canceling at the end of my 30 day trial.

I've been lucky. I haven't had any drop outs with the Lumin, Aurender or even my phone running the Tidal app feeding my KEF LS50W at home that I recall. I have Verizon (now Frontier) FIOS 50mbps in the store and 75mbps at home FWIW.

I wonder if devices like the Lumin and Aurender that buffer help any?

Less than a 10th of a percent for the guy who owns it. They have as many Kiss and Rush albums on the site. I didn't know any of these 3 made that many albums. :D

One of the weird things about Tidal is that they have every version of every tune done on any album. The original, the 2002 re-master, the 2011 remaster, Live at..., the best of..., the greatest hits, etc. If you do an artist search and just hit play, you may hear three versions of the same song in the first 10 plays.

It didn't take long to tire of Jay-Z's endless self-promotion, I just tab thru the home page immediately and also de-selected "Alerts". The App seems to be learning a little about my preferences, but it's not really as good as Pandora when it comes to selecting songs that I MIGHT want to hear. Heard lots of new things that way.

I have a D1/Sbooster I bought used from a friend who upgraded to an S1 and it doesn't make any difference. The problem for most people started in June and has gotten progressively worse. It almost never happens during daytime work hours but gets progressively worse in the evening as the usage increases. Other than immediately blame your ISP, the streamer maker and the streamer software the only suggestion they ever offer is to change your DNS settings to Google Public which does nothing. Also no difference wired or wireless. If you are any an area where there are no problems then you are good for now, but if you are in an area where they are already exhibiting storage and bandwidth issues then it is up to them to decide to fix the problems or loose customers to Qobuz.

Jack, I'm having lunch with four other audiophiles, all big Tidal listeners, none have had drop outs. Two Tampa, two Sarasota. I wonder if this problem is regional??

I appreciate the fact that you guys in the Tampa Bay area are not having problems and those reported on various other forums are also from people not located in the Major Sports Franchise markets, but there are parts of the country where the problems do exist and are getting worse. I have used the tests that the Tidal support people gave me to test both their streams and my ISP's strength and in every case when the problems start the ISP is stilling going full strength, 125 mbps and 10 ms latency. The test of their stream shows less than 20 mbps and 45-67 ms latency. I have even had occasions when their stream was less than 1 mbps. When Tidal is playing cleanly the Tidal numbers match closely those of the ISP. All of these results were given to them at their request over two months ago and updated several times. As of yet they have no answer to the problem and now don't even respond. I bought the Lumin just to make sure even though I didn't need it.

That stinks. Sorry to hear.

There "Quality Assurance" people contacted me yesterday when they saw the support ticket that had been open for over two months so I repeated the whole process to them including the fact that there have been four streamers from three different companies along with multiple versions of software from each. In addition I have tried four different gateways and routers along with multiple DNS settings. The results are always the same and point to bandwidth issues that will become very expensive to fix as you know from your time in IT. As good as it sounds on paper, continuing to roll out MQA titles on top of the existing formats of the same releases is going to make things worse before they get better and in the end the "Investors" will have to decide to put up the capitol to address the issues, sell out or shut down. So as to whether or not MQA actually sounds better or not I can't tell you because ever since they have put up titles that I care about or am familiar with I can't get the thing to stay working long enough to make a fair comparison unless I am willing to do it first thing in the morning when the whole country is at work or school.

Oh and it appears that "Kevin" responds to every complaint I know of so either he is a one man team or just a name the whole section uses for e-mail.

That will show you the path of the stream and then push the speed test button and it will show you the mbps and latency. If you do it when it's working and not you can see the difference compared to the Ookla results you get on the IP.

When it's working the numbers from Tidal pretty much mirror the Speed Test numbers from the ISP. Between 100-125 mbps and 10-11 ms. For weeks I was running the tests for them 5-6 times a night, but when it became obvious nothing was going to happen I quit and just subscribed to Qobuz. After the QA people contacted me yesterday afternoon I ran the test three more times and gave the results to them and then gave up and changed to the other site. I had a friend in Houston, where there should be ample capacity, cancel his subscription for the same thing last month. I have about two weeks left on this months subscription and if nothing improves I am just going to give up and cancel too. I can then just pull the D1/Sbooster combo out and go back to the Aries with the MP DAC and decide what the next move is.

I had some stutters during the beta test of the D1, but since then, I've had no drop outs, at all.. And I ran those test numbers which are so far off from what my ISP speed test show. My ISP Download speed 58.65 mbps and the test you provided only shows which I took the second I finished my test, was speed = 26mbps . Which means to me there is something wrong in Tidal routing land.
