Alison Kraus - Paper Airplane. I know it well. It's significantly better than the previous rig. Much more "alive" and dynamic. Bass is tight and fast. Soundstage is wider. The table is soooo quiet.

MIke,

What is with the 4 Saturn 5 engine nozzles under the table? Flight ? Anti-gravity ?

All kidding aside...drool worthy gorgeous...COngrats

Awesome description!

Mike, if you take the same quality recording but on CD this time, and that you play it on your digital rig;
what is your overall impression between your two playback systems?

That's an excellent question since both my sources have changed. Let me do that and let you know. My digital is a whole lot better now, but my analog may have just leap frogged it again. It sure is fun. Still hard to believe the Marantz was better than the infamous DAC2X. I've told both Chris and Ted they must review it. Marantz hit it out of the park on this one.

Next up, the new vinyl rig vs new digital rig. New phono stage vs old phono stage. I love this stuff! And most importantly - great music all the way along!

After a night of sleep, I decided to reset the stylus rake angle, tracking force, azimuth and arm height. Last night I was 98%.... But this morning I was able to get everything to 100%. Using a fairly high powered magnifying glass, I was able to better see the tip of the diamond on the jig.

Spinning my first record and this table/arm/cart is so much more detailed, with a much wider soundstage than the Avid. Bass is tighter, with much better dynamics, separation and speed. Lightening speed. The Avid/SME was a bit "lazy" sounding laid back. The VPI/Lyra combo is quick and dynamic. The table is just so quiet....I can't believe it. It's a thing of beauty and it sounds as good as it looks.

Setup is definitely not for the faint of heart! I've setup Rega's, Avid and an assortment of other tables and VPI tables are certainly more time consuming and tricky, mainly due to the unipivot arm and the delicate balancing act between tracking force and azimuth. Adjust one and you mess up the other one. Patience is required!
