Might ditch the AV Receiver and forget about Surround Sound altogether...

I almost went with one of those and I still might when I move in a year

Just to chime in...I went a completely different route...Ditched the 5.1 Bose with Yamaha Flagship AVR for...Drumroll...Polk Soundbar and wireless sub. It is more than enough...

Several reasons...surround is not quite what it used to be unless you play Bob's rather eclectic (sorry bob...just saying) Blurays...Your typical StarTrek, Superman, Batman, etc etc.. just winds up being a lot of noise.

I did not have a clean way to wire...entryway, fireplace, etc. So it would have been a hassle in the new house.

I tested the Polk and it does what I need..even mounted cleanly right below the base of the TV

Not knocking surround...just found that my needs could be met easier...and since my audio room is a completely separate deal...well...:P

I fully respect everyone's vision of doing things their way.

Now, what I would love very much so is to hear from Emile (-E-), and what he has to say about this. :)

Me I don't have anything to add than what I already shared and what most of you already know of me in that department.
-> The Audio in Movies is at least 50% of the overall experience. ...From that you can juggle all you want. ...It is your decision and your own experience.

You got it King!

* True story: When I was sixteen I made a 16mm film (about violence and peace).
It was only after that I added a musical score to it that it took true emotional impact and character. ...Without it (music) my film was dead flat!

At the same age I built my first home theater speaker; a single back surround channel.
I used it when Pink Floyd "Live at Pompeii" was being broadcast on TV. It made the entire difference.

So yes, you can use a soundbar, or just stereo speakers when watching TV, or movies (I do with my PC for youtube),
but if I was into gaming and all that jazz you bet that my PC would be supported by a full flange 5.1 surround sound system with subwoofer.

I don't have cable at home, so I never watch TV (for the last 15 years). I only watch Blu-ray movies (2D & 3D), BD documentaries and BD music concerts (very very rarely DVD).
For some news and other stuff that is of relevance to me, I have the Wide Web World available from my IBM PC and I watch on my Samsung 27" widescreen display, given to me by Mike, our very generous host and owner/administrator of the AudioShark website, right here. :)

Right now I'm only using a 60" flat panel plasma display (also from Samsung) for my BDs;
but my next inspiration is an OLED Ultra HD TV, in the 70-80" neighborhood.
If not, a front projector (I like Sony).

And nobody is going to take my Blues (multichannel sound) away from me.
And by the way, many people also know that I'm into multichannel music from Hybrid SACD and DVD Audio.

__________

At the beginning there was only Mono, then Stereo (with the center channel missing because of logistic and financial and recording issues), because Stereo was really three channels.
Then Quad (four channels). Then Dolby Surround (four channels still). Then Dolby Pro Logic (five channels). Then Dolby Digital and dts (5.1-channels, discrete).
And you know the Lossless (uncompressed) rest. ... 7.1 and all that jazz (Audyssey DSX, dts Neo:X, Dolby Atmos, ...).

And I always kept up, and was always a first adopter.
Heck, I was way ahead of my time back in 1971-72.

You simply cannot stop someone like me who is a true sound explorer.
And sound comes from everywhere, up in the sky down to the earth's vibrations and all around us in a 360° sphere.

Music is cool; I'm a musician myself (non-pro) since I was thirteen. And I can tell you many sound stories about my jamming with some of the best. But much better than to talk about it is to play, all together in unison, like a grand jam family.
* We did some music jamming with the audience surrounding us all around, with us in the center.
...Experimentally fun experiences.
See, there is no law in auditory musical pleasures. ...There is no sound pressure in high fidelity sound reproduction and total freedom (sense's abandon).
