..I replaced my beloved MC501s several weeks ago with a brand new pr of 601s. From all the positive posts on the MAC AA forum I was hoping for a significant improvement in sonics. That's exactly what I've ended up with. They're partnered with a C500P preamp and Lumin A1 driving VSA VR5 Anniversary speakers. I am officially off the upgrade merry go round!

Congratulations! They really are great amps. Enjoy. I still toy with the idea of an MC452 for my Strads. So happy for you.

They won our big blind amp shootout. Gotta love it! The funniest comments from those blindfolded regarding the 601's: "those HAVE to be one of the tube amps. Just listen to that glorious tone".

Gavin.......The McIntosh MC601 amplifiers are formidable in every way and great lookers, too. Like you, I replaced a pair of MC501's with the MC601's in 2011 and never looked back. In fact at one point I owned four MC601's, two in the living room system and two in the studio system. I let the two in the studio go when I purchased a pair of MC2301's. Since you mentioned AA, I'm fairly certain you read my McIntosh MC601 Review from August 2011.

Congratulations on your new MC601's. I predict they will remain in your sound system for a very long time.

Oh, did I mention the MC601 is one powerful amplifier?

..hey Dan...or DD if you prefer. Bra size of your recent avatar on AA I trust? My son in law who's a musician with good ears (runner up on Star Search but I digress) was over last night and heard the 601s for the first time. He told me that he was concerned that he might not hear a difference between them and the 501s. After hearing several redbook and DSD FLAC file thru the Lumin his concerns were allayed in spades. He said the improvement was dramatic. These bad boys are here as long as I am! Merry Christmas Dan!

Gavin.......I have gotten the same kind of responses from those who have heard the MC501's and then the MC601's in my living room system. I see no reason to ever move away from the MC601's.

New McIntosh MC601 amps in the house certainly make a Merry Christmas at your place. Happy listening and Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Gavin, congrats on your new MC601's. Mine are not going anywhere. I didn't have MC501's prior to the MC601's but did have a couple of MC352's. I fell in love with the MC601's within a few seconds of listening to them.

What were all of the amps (manufacturer/model) in the shootout?
