MBL goes into the big system. Could this mean a change?

I had the pleasure of spending the last two days with Jeremy and Tara from MBL.

Does it equal the Diablo 300 in sound? That seems to be the real sweet price point for Integrateds of that caliber.

Oh man, totally different. Diablo 300 is a BEAST. A sledge hammer Integrated with massive size soundstage, deep freaking bass and a dark rich tone.

The MBL is buttery smooth on top. It sounds “right” and controlled. Polite. Balanced top to bottom.

That sounds great Mike. The combination appears to have wonderful spatiality and a smooth non-fatiguing tone - the type of sound you could just listen to all day. Whats the list price of the system as shown?

Thanks. $54,400 including speakers, stands, integrated amp and CD/DAC Player.

I own the before gen the c51, and compared to gryphon extensively, and i agree 100% with you mike.
I have an inquiry though: what if you have to compare mids on both ?
I know the n51 is a different beast, but i suppose they have the same genes.

That’s a great question. They are equally good in the mids. I would say the N51 has more body, but the 300 has more definition and microdetail.

Removed the horns. They were causing a reflection off the MBL’s. Improved things by quite a bit.

Again we agree.
More body and liquidity to mbl.
But so slow compared to gryphon!

Mike, that's awesome man. I can't remember the last time I heard the MBL's. It's been AGES, lol. Heard so many great things bout them. I do love their electronics.

So Mike, how did the MBLs compare to the AGs in your home setting?

Still listening. I want to live with them for a couple of days or weeks. Very airy, 3D presentation. The key was would they work in such a crappy room as mine. The answer is yes.

most systems will work in smaller rooms if set up properly. That just seems to be the key. I know someone who uses some large ML's in a smaller bedroom. They take up the whole room, but sound great

The great thing about the MBL 120’s is they will work in almost any room with minimal adjustments and sound outstanding. Refreshing!

Agreed. If they work in my crappy room, they will work in any room. I’m always surprised at how versatile the MBL’s are (when I assume they wouldn’t be). They do need side walls and a back wall (wall behind the speaker) though to work their best. They need at least 32 inches from the middle of the speaker to the side wall and at least 32 inches from the back wall. Back wall and side wall distances should be different (3 feet and 4 feet for example). Since they rely on reflection, absorption is also not recommended. Diffusion is ok. Silk plants work best.

How do MBL 120s compare to AG Duos or Mezzos, or to Magico M3s for that matter?

Do the sound big or small, or equal? What’s your impression?
