Mass loading Shindo speakers

I was having some audible resonance issues with my Shindo 604's vibrating the plywood Matt recommended I sit them on. These vibrations seemed to be interacting with my floor and causing a subtle ringing. Once I noticed it, I couldn't un-hear it.

I removed the plywood and the issue improved a bit, but was still there. Then I stacked 3 boxes of LP's on each 604.

Whoa! The difference was not subtle.

Everything become more solid and focused. Not going to bother to describe it beyond that.

It isn't pretty, but if you have a flat top speaker, give it a try.

The 604's are pretty lightweight, so my guess is that low frequency sound is causing vibrations that certainly aren't helping the sound. Mass loading seems to tighten up the speaker's foundation and let their capabilities shine through. Haven't seen this discussed before, but I'd be surprised if others haven't tried this.

I wonder if stillpoints or Magico QPOD's (if the speakers are light enough) would be worth trying in this situation?

Isn't it funny how once we become aware of something like cabinet vibrations or line noise or something similar, our OCD kicks into high gear? I'm of course speaking from personal experience!

Well, I wouldn't call it funny per se, but you're right. Once you notice something, it's hard not to hear it ALL THE TIME.

I suspect the issues I'm having right now are a bunch of little things related mostly to my room. I have these kinda ceramic tile floors that are interacting with other components (speakers, rack, turntable, etc) that seem to be causing at least some of my issues. My particular issues only manifest themselves on LP playback, but that sadly leaves quite a lot to troubleshoot. :(

It could be excess rumble from your turntable/arm/cart combo. Do you have another turntable you could try?

Shindo 604 speakers doesnt have internal damping at all, so they react like a musical instument to all mistakes, be it in the electric front end or in a not well prepared room. They are simply not able to defend, as they are all big acoustic volume speakers tuned by ear to the hifi chain and perfect room conditions.
Western Electric and Altec never went that road that far, most popular speaker cab designs use at least minimal internal bracing.
Shindo banned it completely. Now your result shows what could happen when not being used in perfect conditions.
Its a walk on the knifes edge with those enclosure designs.
