Hi
Have you checked the price of the new 5000 series at ML? An integrated with DAC and PHONO, a patented preamp section, and al and all for 8500 $?!!!
What is going on ?

Nothing really going on. A lot of companies offering integrateds with loads of cool features with performance. . Bryston's B135 3 cubed at 135 watts is $6500 , but you add the optional DAC ($750)and phono (750) is $7995.00.

My guess is marketing design and strategy to cast a broader sales net, still gear is expensive even when making things simpler...

Hopefully, ML and others are realizing that when your line begins at 5 figures you omit a lot of potential customers. And, as mentioned in another thread, new, younger, audiophiles don't generally start out with the type of budget to afford 5 figures. Although $8k give or take is still a large sum, it's a step in the right direction. Only time will tell how much a value these pieces will be.

Well do you think they use downgraded solutions ? And it is class AB not D (allthough you have a wonderfull class D ML Mr Peabody)....i am even class use is not explaining this... difficult to explain commercially... either this is saying "we were making fun of you with the 5 numbers figure price" or this is saying "we decided to make cheap ML" (cheap as in poor quality)....in both cases not very nice a message...

Still on the 5805 there is on top of everything else a preamp out for either a powered sub or say a tube amp....which is sweet !!

I think ML made a quality product or else they wouldn't put their name on it. I'm sure there were areas they found to save by using a less expensive part, less isolation or something.

Parasound makes a decent integrated for $2500.00. So I look at it as a good, better, best type of thing, the new ML may not be on par with the 585 but that doesn't mean it's not a good product.

My 532h is A/B.

I dont understand this topic.

Are you complaining that Levinson has released lower priced gear? If so, why?

You can still buy their top of the line if you wish.

I do not complain...
I am asking about brand identity and beside what is justifying 20K versus 8k technically...as the brand itself doesn t explain...
Someone is grumpy today

Clearly ML wants to attract buyers that have no interest in spending $20K on Integrateds. Good for them? If Companies dont respond to their markets then they will fail very quickly.

Sure...but do you see Ferrari droping their price by more than half ?
Does it say something about the company s financial health ? It reflects a change a srategy: big margin small sales volume versus the opposite....
A new patent for the preamp section should lead to a price increase just like Bryston did.... Oh well ! Let s hope it has the ML sound signature...can t wait to test it!

Many moons ago, I owned Proceed stuff (amps, preamp, transport), which was basically baby Levinson (and when my friend worked for a high end shop for around a six year period I did basically every delivery/install with him). Wasn't what I would call budget by any means but nice values for the money. With the Bryston stuff for a while the value of the Canadian to USD at some points (e.g. https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=CAD&to=USD&view=10Y) drove up the price. I had some Bryston amps I bought light used around 2002 and used them for a long while and with the price increases due to the exchange values when I eventually sold them 5-6 years back it was a very cheap rental for around the decade I owned them. Interesting though that when the Canadian dollar fell back, I don't recall any adjustments to those prices. Also, I'm sure some of the tariff problems in the last couple of years impacted production costs for many companies as well as the price increases in metals.

If they had the production capacity/quality control to do so I'm sure they would. All it says is that they want their product in more peoples hands.

Ferrari may not be the best example. Mercedes, BMW and even Tesla offer more affordable models.

You don't typically see why a model is less expensive in sales articles, they want to point out what is good about it. We'd need insider information to know how they reached a lower price point.

I view lower priced options a positive until something would show otherwise.

I agree. I don't why it would be any other way.

Well tesla is on the grill as the year 2019 and more importantly 2020 will apparently decide of its fate....sorry if my car metaphore is inappropriate, but what i meant is that surely price tag was a property of ML, so with the item you purchase the social status associated with having money bla bla bla...so reinforcing your selfestime even more...

But if you are correct Mr Peabody, and i tend to agree, if it just is "we want more people to enjoy our stuff", without sacrificing quality, but by margins shrinkage , it means that previous items were overpaid...and it is good news indeed for the future buyers....

And yes I complain about bryston's prices increasing by 10% every year, so my title ! ML was (at least for me) unaffordable dreams and it is becoming a rather possiblme reality, when Bryston was an accessible quality, and it is becoming les and less accessible....

I just wanted to point this odd "chassé croisé"....
