I have long been a fan of the Magneplanar speakers going back to the 1980's with a set of MG IIs. I currently have a set of 1.7s and 20.7s, so I am pretty experienced with the house sound.

For my Phoenix home, I was looking for a relatively small speaker but wanted the wall to wall soundstage that you get from great planar type speakers but the wife will NOT allow a big techno looking speaker sitting 1/3 of the way into her living room. So, after much head scratching and a multitude of options - I heard about this 'very opinionated' guy that completely rebuilds Maggie's with beautiful bespoke wood frames. He also throws away the crap crossovers and wiring with a fresh innovative approach. Read more about it on his website.

Personally, I like people with opinions - that are based on years of research and experience. That is what might be called 'knowledge'. So, PG and I got along just fine - being two opinionated guys.

The speaker is a highly modified Magneplanar MMG. Yeah, I know the least expensive speaker in the line and very small. So, you are thinking it won't have any low end and couldn't compare to the more 'advanced' ribbons in the .7 line. Just goes to show you never know till you try it.

I am not an audio reviewer and am not particularly eloquent but this speaker deserves attention. IMO: For the total price of the speaker and the rebuild - there is NO more coherent speaker that I have ever heard. That includes the more expensive maggies. The wife loves the speaker saying that it is endearing and has a lovely appearance and fits in with the decor. She has heard many speakers over the years and she says this one has an 'intimate' sound quality. She likes it.

My opinion on sound quality: My best description is that it is warm and pleasant but not in a rolled off and blurred sense. It is warm in that it has a rich and powerful bass response and has NO harshness, grit or grain in the mid-range and treble. It throws a wall to wall - floor to ceiling soundstage. It has vocal quality similar to a Quad but has much better low end and treble and can play quite loudly without strain. If you close your eyes, it plays like a much larger speaker. This is not an audiophile speaker - it is a music lovers speaker. I can't give higher praise than that.

IMO: There is no cone based speaker that has the top to bottom coherence (of one voice) even remotely close to the purchase price of these little guys.

If you have caviar tastes with a modest budget you might want to give these a try. Highly recommended.

PS - I have no business or financial interest and I paid full price and happy to do it.

This may be a dumb question, but do we buy the speakers and have them shipped to PG or does the price include the speakers? These could be awesome. The testimonials have me intrigued. :)

A buddy has a pair, great workmanship, the most dynamically alive Maggies I've heard, play louder than most, percussion (bongos) on MFSL Abraxas was especially live sounding, slightly rolled off top end took away from the tinkling glass effects.

Agree,

The Maggies from the .7 Right up to the 3.7 are very competitive and hard to beat $ for $ ...
