Magico S5 mk2

Another great pic of the S5 Mk2's at the Taiwan Hi End show..

In regard to the X light refractions on each woofer, I have noticed that on mine, and photographed it for a post, but I never made the post.

Anyway, what I was wondering is if the woofers can be tweaked for better response by making sure the light images are in phase on each woofer. Notice how they are close on the left speaker, but off on the right. Should the we try to rotate a right woofer to get the light in phase with each other, and will that improve the sound.

Just the engineer in me wondering.

This is the photo I made that started me wondering if the pattern meant anything.

So how do you get a large image to appear on this forum?

To be honest I wasn't sure if your post was meant to be humorous, or was a serious question Bud :doubtful:. Going with the latter, looking at the graphene diaphragms and dust caps on my S5 Mk2's in natural light, atleast in my room the light refractions are not visible. The Graphene-reinforced carbon Nano-Tec material seems to be highly reflective of light, hence under show conditions with show lighting you get these uneven light refractions. However I think the uneveness of the refractions is purely due to the angle of the lights hitting the drivers. The S Mk2 series drivers (like all Magico drivers) are built to very tight tolerances, added to which Magico carefully test every speaker which leaves the factory to make sure the individual drivers & loudspeaker as a whole are within spec. For example MC measured the S5 Mk2's pair matching at a SOTA ±0.75dB L/R agreement from 50Hz to 36kHz in his review for Hifi Critic.

I was being serious. I found the light patterns curious when I saw it on mine, and wondered why it wasn't the same on both. Whether making it the same affects the sound or not is my question. I doubt it, but it would be interesting to investigate it if I worked at Magico. Then again, I probably would be fired if I did that. :)

For Magico S5 Mk2 users, I just took delivery of a pair of Magico S5 MK2 with SPODs on Friday morning and started breaking them in on Saturday morning (after the speakers came to room temperature). Firstly, they are one of the most dynamic and resolving speakers I have heard. A few questions for long-term users:

1) How many hours does it take to break-in a pair of Magico S5 MK2?
2) If I were looking to upgrade speaker cables from AQ Aspen what would you recommend?

Electronics are a full Bryston setup with 7B3 amps, BP26 / MPS2 preamp, BDA2/BDP2 source.

Congrats John. I would say a good 200 hours to start (75%) and then 500 hours to have full break in.

I played mine 24/7 for a week when I first got mine, and they were sounding darn good when I really listened to them. Of course, they also sounded good right from the start.

I just upgraded my speaker cable to Shunyata Sigma. This added a more precise edge to the music. That is, the instruments, and voices, are now really striking in where they are in the air. If I could draw on air I think I could outline each note.

My local Magico dealer does sell Shunyata cables so the Sigma cable is a possibility once funds permit. When you get a chance can you let me know how flexible the cable is and the diameter?'

Thank you,

John

Congrats on the speakers. Also consider MIT as a replacement to your AQ cables. Magico uses MIT in their factory listening room with various electronics.

I don't own Magico but, I went from AQ OAK to MIT EVO cables in my system and after break in I've found that MIT has a big bold sound with better decay and "presence" if you will over my previous AQ loom. Now, I think the AQ cables especially ones with the DBS have a really low noise floor. Allowing a lot of micro detail to come through and very black backgrounds. The price increase to go a a full AQ silver cable such as Redwood to obtain more resolution had me look elsewhere. I felt MIT had the best synergy and sound to what I was looking for.

Shunyata's ZiTron technology is also a very quiet and precise cables from what others have stated.
