Magico S3 mk2

When Ferrari's F1 racing team develops a new technology that will shave off 1/100th of a second, should they just wait?

It's always hard to find a right balance between rolling out new tech and keeping a healthy life cycle for a product. I believe it cannot skew one-sided constantly if the aim is to have a sustainable business model. Do I think Magico has the perfect balance for the customers? No. But I do think their model is driven by their internal sales numbers and it will always continue to be. After all this is a business first and foremost. I trust Alon will make adjustment if the numbers start showing differently, but until then we won't see a product life cycle like that of a Focal product (8 years).

I wonder if Magico came out with a woofer upgrade for the S5 MKII if it would really make much of a difference. It would certainly look cleaner, but would it sound better? I doubt it, but who knows. I will be glad when my SPODs arrive since they are supposed to make a nice improvement.

Pretty much what I have been trying to convey in my ramblings: Great top to bottom coherence, great bass definition and newly found structure + he is praising the top end, which has already been favorably reviewed in case of the S7 and S5 mk2 (same drivers).
No they're not as discussed earlier.

Surely, with my problems with the English language, I have not expressed myself correctly. I do not want to say that between the MKI version and the MKII there are no major improvements, I mean that between S5 MKII and S3 MKII there are small differences (woofer) that will surely make S5 MKII owners think they no longer have the best Magico I could Offer in the S series.
No. Only one member is purporting that myth, and we all know who that is .

I think the good old Norwegians had him beat by a couple of weeks:)

The only problem with the Norwegian one is no-one understands it without and Google translator is cumbersome due to the length [emoji3].

Graphene woofers or not, the S5 mk 2 is still a better sounding speaker to those ears.

There is only one person I know or heard of that claims otherwise ... and that is the S3 mk 2 owner.

Kind of reminds me the Ferrari California owners who claim their car is 'better' then the Italia.

Hi Mike.
Frankly I think the example is not right. If you want to take it to the field of automobiles, it would be more appropriate to compare it with commercial production brands (BMW series 1,3,5 .......). The example of Ferrari and F1, transferred to Magico, would rather be that Alon introduced minor improvements in the S3 MKII every time his mind developed a new idea, bone every 3 months. In this way, the S3 MKII manufactured in January, was slightly different from the one manufactured in April. And this, in turn, to the one manufactured in September .........
I imagine how happy the buyers would be, but where happiness would reach Nirvana, it would be in the sellers who would see their stocks become obsolete each 3 months.

And what was actually said was that the graphene woofers bring a texture to the bass, that was not there with the alu cones and that probably there's going to be an upgrade to the remaining speakers with alu cones. No witchcraft involved guessing that, as without exception all the latest Magico models feature graphene woofers. Regarding alu cones, even Wilson Audio has stopped using them. So, it should be a fairly simple equation for anyone to solve.

Magico has made one special LS which was in many ways more groundbreaking than other of its great products: The M Pro with the diamond coated tweeter, graphene mid and woofers, CF cabinet, MPODs. Some of those technologies have now trickled down nicely into the S3 mk2: diamond coated tweeter, graphene midrange and woofers - more so than to its larger and earlier released brethren. Even the midrange enclosure trickled up from the S3 mk1 up to S5 mk2.

But who likes what and which solution sounds best to anyone's ears, what is the best speaker and in which environment, I could not possibly tell, nor would I care to. It is a matter of actual room acoustics, system and personal preference.

But to play along with the car comparisons, it's a bit this year's F1 with last year's engine kind of situation. Probably still competitive, but could be better.

Mr Biermann's (former Chief Editor of Stereoplay) piece on the S3 mk2:

http://www.lowbeats.de/magico-s3-mk-ii-hoeren-auf-dem-olymp/

In a nutshell: One of the most experienced reviewers in Germany states that Alon Wolf has been so successful with his S3 mk2 development, that he asks the question whether anyone would need a Q3 as there is the S3 mk2 for less than 2/3 of the money. He then adds he would not.

Not surprising - the Q3 was released in 2010 - about 7 years ago. In Magico years that's about a century. In any case, it was before the diamond beryllium tweeter, the graphene midrange or woofer, the upgraded crossovers, etc.. Q3 hasn't gotten any love from Alon for a long time, and it's now a has been.

Completely agree with you, like the newer models better.

Although the Q3 is still the highest rated Magico ever in the leading German Stereoplay magazine this gentleman used to be Chief Editor of (other Magicos reviewed are M5, Q5, S5, S1). So, it's kind of a nice compliment.

Nevertheless it is a great product I think, although I personally prefer a bit more warmth.
