The Qsub 15 is very, very good. It does wonder together with my M Pros:D

This article should be of interest to Raidho D-3.1 and D-5.1 owners who have not been able to tame the 60 - 80 Hz mid-bass bump.

Totally irrelevant review. How many are going to partner a Magico sub with anything other than a Magico speaker?

He should have replaced the JL subs in his MProject system with the Q Subs and then reported.

Uhhh...I have a client with Raidho D5's who will have two Magico Q-Sub 15's next week. He was way ahead of JV. He ordered his in August.

Lucky him...the only guy on the planet with that combo... and now a review for that one guy......totally irrelevant...

The nice thing about Mike's site Audioshark is that many of the guys that comment on equipment are actually the guys that have the components of which they pass opinions. This applies to this thread and numerous others.

I await to hear Mike's client's comments about the pairing.

It might actually interest me into further investigation with my D5.1's

Thanks Mike for fostering this environment.

Hi Leroy,

I was actually wondering if you might be Mike's client. :)

Do you feel the D-5.1's in your listening room might benefit from the additional bass provided by Magico's subwoofers or do you feel you already have sufficient bass?

As for my system, I was recently asked if I would purchase the Vandersteen subwoofers. I explained that my listening room is not that large (21' x 17') and the Vandy 7 MkII's internal powered subwoofers already provided more than sufficient bass for my room. Anything additional would just be excessive.

Best,
Ken

I am not Mike's client that is considering the Magico q-sub 15 for his system. It is the other D5 owner here. I believe he already ordered those subs for his room before this review came out. That makes him quite perspicacious for knowing this before JV's review. I am quite anxious to see his comments on how this might perfect the bottom octave for his room.

There is nothing like total system synergy like you have with the Vandy's. Soup to nuts!

Hi Ken,

I don't mean to answer for Le Roy, but my understanding is that the benefit of successfully integrating a sub is not so much about adding more bass; but also and perhaps even more importantly, it's about providing a more solid foundation to better sort out the midrange and upper frequencies in order to let them shine in an even more coherent way.

I'm certainly tempted to look into the Magico sub for my system.

Hi CMarin,

You make an excellent point. The D-5.1 could potentially benefit from the addition of two subwoofers to improve the low frequency foundation as they do not have internal subwoofers.

In the case of my Vandersteen 7 MkII's, adding two Vandersteen subwoofers is a question of bass quantity because each speaker already has two 12-inch internal powered subwoofers. Consequently, the use of the Vandersteen external subwoofers is only recommended for the the Vandy 7 MkII's in larger rooms.

Best,
Ken

I find that in a properly integrated sub system with full range speakers, the only way you know the sub is on is to turn it off and the mid range falls flat. You don't really loose bass, unless you are listening to techno or pipe organ music.

I also find that the size of room has NOTHING to do with needing subs. In fact, smaller rooms often need subs more than larger rooms because the bass doesn't have the room to fill up the room because of the large wavelengths - damn physics.

I'll be happy to report back once the Q-15s get here and broken in. I loved the Wilson Watch Dog subs that I had but then sold because I mistakenly thought that the D5s wouldn't need subs. Stupid move on my part. I really liked the Q-15s that I heard at Magico so much I decided to bite the bullet and order a pair. I've been using a pair of REL Gibraltar G2s and they are good, but no match for the Wilsons that I had and soon to have Q-15s.

I also can't in good conscience recommend anybody spending this kind of money for subs. It's crazy!!!! Only if you are going for that last 5%, a great sub will get you 4% of the last 5%.

Jock, great post & very wise. I too will never have a system without subs, it's just the ducks nut's with cream.

Hi Jock,

Congrats on your Magico Q-Sub 15 purchase! I'll be interested to read if the Q-Subs give your D-5's the same improvement in bass linearity, control and definition that JV experienced in his listening room. It seems like a very worthy and well thought out addition to an already top notch speaker. Will you also be purchasing the JL Audio CR-1 outboard analog subwoofer crossover? I for one really enjoyed reading JV's article and I'm sure that it will be helpful to a number of D-5 and D-5.1 owners.

As for my Vandersteen 7 MkII's, they already have dual internal 12-inch powered subwoofers in each speaker, which provide all the bass foundation (down to 20 Hz) I will ever need in my listening room. Richard V. recommends adding the Vandersteen Sub 9 external powered subwoofers in large rooms so as to not overload the room with excessive bass, so you can argue the point with him. The Sub 9 would be total overkill in my 21' x 17' listening room.

Best,
Ken

Thanks

I've listened to the Vandy 7 mk2s but never in a room i was familiar with. So I certainly am no savant w that system, but what I've heard - a good sub would improve it and its a great speaker. That is NO disrespect to the Vandys or any speaker for that matter - I really like the Vandys. If you ever get a chance to install a pair of decent subs - mid priced RELs work really well, cross them 30-35hz you perhaps might change your mind. If not - GREAT. I love it when the cheaper simple solution works out best for somebody. Congrats!

Thanks Jock! Do you think you'll purchase the JL Audio CR-1 outboard analog subwoofer crossover or do you have something else planned?
