Today I received a used Lyra Delos from Mike and first I want to say thanks to him for a great transaction. Don't ever be afraid to buy anything from Mike. He is a great guy and we should really be thankful that he started this site. Okay soapbox rant over...
I think this cart has been all around these great United States and has been broken in by a few members here on AS. I really wasn't expecting to upgrade so quickly since I just got back into vinyl in June. It was basically an offer I couldn't refuse. But I digress... It took me a couple of times to get things right as far as set up goes. First off, having a digital scale to accurately gauge the VTF is a must. I have a Clearaudio metal balance scale that I used on my former cart and let me tell you, it wasn't even close! I also used an AccuTrak protractor that both Jeff and Rob suggested and it is such an easy device to use. Just follow the basic directions and it's cartridge set up 101.
My other cart is a Clearaudio Concept MC which is a great one in it's own right. It's quiet, detailed and is great at retrieving much information from a record. The Delos is on another level. Mike told me that it had great energy and I had an idea of what he meant but it wasn't until I played some vinyl that I fully understood it. It's fast, detailed and accurate without being too sterile and harsh. Somehow Lyra was able to make it musical as well. It has a nice neutral sound with just enough body to give the music a richness.
My current analog rig makes me very happy right now and one of the best things about getting back into vinyl is that I can start acquiring more music. Isn't that the main reason we got into this crazy hobby after all?
