Luxman M900u Monos and C900u

Hi Mike

First, I would like compliment you for your You Tube videos. They are fantastic.

I wonder if can give me your personal opinion on something.
I recently bought a Luxman M-900U that I really like and that I feel it's a great match for my B&W 800D3.
It replaced my Simaudio Moon Evolution 860A.
I'm using a Simaudio Moon 740P preamp.
In your opinion, what would be the best upgrade, replace the 740P with a C-900U or keep the 740P and buy another M-900U?
Thank you in advance for your time.
Happy new year!

Hi Mike

Please let hear from you.
Thank you

Kind regards

Hi, welcome and thank you for the kind words. Buy another 900u would be my recommendation. The pre change will be a lateral move. The 900u will take your power from 150 watts to over 600 in mono mode, and still handle the impedance swings of the 800D3 just fine. You will hear a much bigger soundstage, more relaxed and effortless presentation.

Keep us posted on how things work out!

I believe you're right.

I will keep you posted on any upgrades.

Hi

Has anyone tried the Luxman M900-u in horizontal biamping vs bridged mono vertical biamping?

Kind regards

I would go Boulder with Focal or VAC. Pass X260.8/XP22 would be another more cost effective option. The Luxman m900/c900 would be very good too, but I would want more meat on the bones with the Focal tweeter.

Dear Mike,

To be clear, instead of 2 bridged Luxman M-900u's, you'd still prefer the Pass Labs X260.8 monoblocks? These have less than half the Luxman's power. If so, it's not about watts per channel but rather the style or character of the power?

P.S. I have no opportunity to go out and compare these components myself, so I'm very grateful for you sharing your expertise here.

Hi Mike,

My dealer gave me the chance to try a C-900U on my system. Not a lateral move but huge back move.
I was hoping for a better match between it and the M-900U, than with the 740P.
Well, much to my surprise it was the absolute opposite. The match with the 740P is so much better that I was amazed. Compared with it the C-900U was lacklustre and the bass sound weak.
For now the 740P stays...

Thank you for your time...

Yes, I did.

Didn't like it.
Voices became a little more present, the bass became a little stronger but lost clarity and definition, and the treble was the major disappointment because it became aggressive.
Overall, I felt the sound lost refinement and the sensation of ease and grace of the stereo.
Not my cup of tea but may work well for others...

Not disagreeing with your assessment but did you try different cabling to see if any of it changed, sometimes optimization for one isn't the same for all ..!

Did you connect the speakers cable to the upper bindings as required in BTL mode?
From your descriptionit i suspect you might mis configure speaker cables place, connecting them as in stereo mode.

Everything was correctly connected.

Cables were kept the same. Changing cables would be entering a never ending path of experimentation between mono and stereo mode.
