Lumin X1

Re: Lumin X1 Flagship Roon Ready Network Player

This Lumin X1 seems to be a very good product, but I have a hard time to understand the real difference between a LUMIN streamer, and a simple streaming DAC like Brinkmann Nyquist, dcS Rossini, Merging NADAC player, Auralic VEGA G2, Ayre QX-5 twenty.... Lumin position itself away from those streaming DAC, but... isn't it the same animal at the end ?

Indeed, booth have a DAC included and booth need to be connected to a NAS (or USB HD in some cases) through ethernet for storage. Plus the streaming DAC can also be used as a Roon endpoint if the NAS has enough power to run Roon CORE.

Indeed many of these products are functionally similar. Differences include SQ, price, optical network, and other features like control point convenience, MQA (if you use Tidal), etc. If you use Roon, there's also the issue of how committed a manufacturer is for supporting Roon. Reading Roon forum you'll see certain manufacturers have major issue(s) that have not been solved for over a year. Check which version of RAAT they're using. Certain manufacturer(s) also promised features that have been delayed for 6 months or more.

Lumin cannot run Roon Core - please use an i5 / i7 computer for that. Running Roon Core on the DAC is against Roon philosophy to sound quality Rule #1:

thanks a lot for your answer. I understand that LUMIN cannot run Roon Core, but... can the LUMIN be a ROON Endpoint and allow us to choose (on the fly ? ) between ROON interface and Lumin iPAD app to play our music ?

Yes.

Thank you so much, Mike, for the beta firmware... "Tic sound" still there when resampling non-gapeless tracks, but no more [emoji106] when I'm in random playback. I appreciate it. A lot of "on my own" testing for a 15k unit, but I'm getting use to it.

Now, is this LPSU sounds normal or should I return it?

Thank you!

Hi Vinci,

Glad that your "tic sound" situation has been improved.

I had a look at the video, I do realise when the camera is very close to the power supply, a buzz sound can be heard. From what I heard in the video, the sound is quite small and it should be related to the DC offset of the mains. If you have access to a power conditioner, you can try to connect the X1 through the power conditioner and see if the condition is improved.

By the way, Youtube was the only way to show it because od the Audioshark upload limit. I'm going to delete it soon. I got a "Shakti Stone" underneath the PSU, 2 or 3 inches under. If I remove it, the sound is louder.

My X1 LPSU is directly powered by a high end conditioner: Isotek Titan.

Thanks for your help.

Fortunately, the vibration have no effect on the sound. The LPSU it quite warm, compared to all my other LPSUs. It appeared one or two weeks after plugging in.

With a new firmware, no more "Tic" noise issue between resampled tracks and that in any case (random or not). Thank you so much Peter Lie !!! :celebrate008_2:

Now that the adjustments have been made, and the people who have seen me share unrestrained criticism know me as someone very demanding and who has the nerve, here is my word to describe the new Lumin X1: Unbeatable. Living, moving, smooth but so much texture. Is it a living being. Its musicality is a rock that will not be beaten for a long time.

Oh, so the Lumin uses a control point UI very similar to the Esoteric Soundstream App. The downside of network playback on my Esoteric N-01 is that App. After a short while using it I always gravitate back to my Kaleidescape App and just SPDIF to my N-01.

I had the LUMIN X1 at home for listening this past weekend - courtesy of Mike. This new LUMIN improves on the exceptional S1. I continue to be impressed with LUMIN gear - quality, sound, support and ease of use.

How did it differ from the S1 to you Mike?

More 3D. Better resolution. It’s definitely a step up over the S1.

The optical connection takes FOREVER to break in. 500+ hours.

Mike and I listened together for a few hours on Saturday. I kept the X1 through Monday. As a result, I was able to do 5 listening sessions.

To me, the X1 provides a more natural and open musical presentation. This is specially true with voices - female and male. Also, I was able to hear more detail - cymbals, bells and the micro detail of the music are more clear. However, I would not call it analytical or dry, simply a bit more clarity than the S1. They are closer in the bottom end - both very dynamic and strong bottom end.

Is it worth the upgrade? I think so. However, the S1 is still a heck of a player (sounds terrific, looks good, easy to use and terrifically supported by the Lumin team). Lastly, I like it better than my Esoteric CD/SACD player.
