Our LUMIN X1 arrived yesterday! After a bit of warm-up today, we finally had a listen. In one word..."WOW!" The LUMIN team delivered as promised...Congrats and many thanks! Absolutely reference class digital.

If anyone is interested to hear the new X1 in the Chicago area, we would be happy to arrange a demo.

Cheers!
Mike

The black brushed chassis looks really good.

Since I plan on using my Lumin X1 with Audio Research, I went with silver. Mine is arriving in a few days. I already bought all the necessary gizmo’s for using the optical.

The black looks nice.

It really looks great in Black , but am sure the silver is also looking great :)

I’ve checked out various pictures of both finishes across the model range (promotional pictures as well as user pictures) and either choice is a winner in my mind. Matching to supplemental system gear is the right choice.

@Archon, what type of differences are you hearing and listening notes come to you so far? Especially compared to the S1. Would love to know your thoughts!

Hi Jerbil - My initial take is the X1 sounds more powerful (fuller/warmer with more dynamics) than the S1 at the same measured volume. Don't get me wrong I still think the S1 sounds wonderful, but I felt the use of a great pre-amp made my system better. However, with the X1 I am starting to think that no pre-amp is required.

We also have the "Optical Gizmos"...just want to get a few more hours on the unit before changing things...but will keep everyone in the loop with our findings.

More later...

Just to pick up where we left off...

We tested the the Lumin optical connection today. We purchased the switch and SFP as recommended by Mike the AudioShark (from another post)...many thanks for that! Everything worked perfectly (and very easy).

My only comment is this...it seems BRIGHTER with the optical vs. standard ethernet. Perhaps in the same way that ST Glass or Toslink vs SPDIF or AES/EBU sounds. I think I will let everything settle in for a bit before making any decisions (or further comments). Only wanted to share my initial thoughts.

Thanks!
Mike

After living with the X1 for about two weeks...it is a truly FANTASTIC player! Absolutely Reference class. I am hooked on optical...at first I thought it was a smidge brighter than ethernet, but I think now that it is just clearer/more transparent...for me there is no going back!

Congrats again to Peter Lie and the Lumin team! GREAT JOB and many thanks!!!

I'm a little unclear what this X1 thing does, and why I might need it, and anything that might be unique about it that other things don't do. Particularly other things that I already own.

Lumin X1 is rather similar functionally to the Esoteric N-01 you use. They sound different due to differences in DAC chips and other hardware. Depends on country Lumin X1 may be priced much lower ($13k vs $20k in USA), X1 supports higher sample rates from network input (DSD512 vs DSD128) as well as optical network, but N-01 offers digital inputs to be used as a standalone DAC (especially for those who continue to use a separate CD transport), as well as a clock input for those who like external clocks.

I'm seeing a list price of $13,990 for the Lumin X1 at a couple of US dealers.

Ah right, I see. I use my Esoteric 50:50 network/USB and coax. The standalone DAC capability for external digital source is an essential requirement for me.
