Lumin T2 and Spotify Connect

I have a Lumin T2. I bought it new a couple of months ago. I've been very happy with it. I use Tidal, Spotify and Internet Radio.

In the last month or so, Spotify (via Spotify Connect) has become increasingly unreliable. It will work, but over time becomes intermittently un-connectable through my T2. It is visible and seemingly available in the devices area of the Spotify app, but when I try to connect, it simply says "Connecting..." and times out.

My remedy had been to cold start (power off/on) the T2, and most times, this works. There are often times where the Spotify connection is working and then just abruptly stops and I'm unable to connect again.

This morning, I was unable to connect to my T2 via Spotify connect at all. I've tried everything I could think of, including cold-starting the T2, resetting the T2, turning Spotify connect on/off. No joy. Same behavior, visible and selectable but it wouldn't connect. I came back a few hours later and now it works.

When this is happening, I am still able to stream on the T2 using Tidal and Internet Radio 100% of the time. I am also able to to stream without problems from the Spotify app directly to my mac, my ipad and my iphone, using the same network.

Spotify has it's flaws, but I like its auto-generated suggestions (background music while I work, a customized radio station without commercials) and wish I could do this through Tidal, but I can't. Fidelity is less important to me than convenience in this case; I use Tidal when I'm seriously listening.

Is this a known problem with the Spotify connect implementation on the T2? Can you suggest a workaround?

Hardware 106010
Firmware 12.0
Release date 2020-1-14
Status Code 80000500 (working at this moment, this changes?)
Spotify Connect SDK 3.23a-v3.23.49-g5...

Hope you can help,

Please power off all devices on the network, including Lumin, iPad, iPhone, Mac. Power cycle the router, all WiFi access points and all network switches. Wait for 5 minutes then power up everything again.

If that does not solve the problem, let me know and I'll make a new firmware for you (with Spotify 2020 SDK integrated).

Welcome to the forum nosualc. Maybe it can also help to shut down the app , and the reconnect the Lumin app.

Otherwise i have to say that Peter Lie and the guys at Lumin are incredible in their way to help customers. :)

I have quite a bit of professional experience troubleshooting software (@wklie, I have been in your position many times, trying to remotely diagnose a customer problem with limited info. Thanks for your patience. #empathy).

I have, in the course of trying to fix this, shutdown everything (via power), tracing back as far as my router. When the problem occurs, power cycling does not seem to fix it, at least more than temporarily.

The pattern is:

1. Cold start (T2, switch, router, Spotify clients, etc.)
2. 90% probability of being able to connect my Spotify client via Spotify Connect and stream. Everything's cool.
3. At some point the streaming stops mid-song.
4. When I try to re-connect to the T2, 90% probability that it fails.

At all times I am able to stream from Tidal or Radio from my T2. These services have always been 100% rock-steady.
At all times I am able to stream from Spotify to my Spotify clients.

The intermittent nature of the problem is confounding.

Anecdotally it seems as though things are more unstable during daytime hours (US). Cue pure speculation.

I'll keep plugging away at it to see if I can find a smoking gun, but I'm skeptical.

A beta firmware with the latest Spotify March 2020 SDK was sent to you. See if it helps. If not, there may be something odd with the network infrastructure.

One more thing, please disable Lumin Streaming, so that you're not accidentally using AirPlay instead of Spotify Connect.

I've installed the firmware beta. It's working initially. I'll test drive for the next few days and post results.

Thanks @wklie!

Hi folks,

I too am "wed" to Spotify Connect. Fantastic functionality, using the native Spotify app on iOS with LUMIN as Spotify Connect device. (I do not use AirPlay a/k/a LUMIN Streaming, to avoid the vagaries of Wi-Fi, and rapid battery exhaustion on mobile devices.)

I've worked around similar issues with my X1 (Spotify stream unexpectedly stops, inability to reconnect to X1) by toggling Options > Spotify Connect "Off" and "On" in the LUMIN app.

Yesterday (07 May 2020) Spotify struggled and ultimately refused to connect to my X1, in spite of toggling the Spotify Connect in LUMIN app (waiting a moment each time, before re-enabling). But the issue coincided with a widely reported Spotify outage. (Attributed to a Facebook API bug!) Everything is working as expected today.

@Peter: I am not clear whether the beta firmware recently I tested for you uses the March Spotify SDK. Just wanted to report my experience, and ongoing interest in Spotify Connect. Thank you for your steadfast support. It is appreciated.

@Peter: I am not clear whether the beta firmware recently I tested for you uses the March Spotify SDK.

No, because it was integrated only yesterday. The firmware is sent to you in our existing PM conversation elsewhere.

@brw That is interesting information, and could explain why things absolutely would not work for me earlier in the day yesterday.

It does not explain the general intermittent failures I've been seeing, and perhaps you have too.

The updated firmware, has so far been working without issue, so I'm hopeful. I'll run it continuously this weekend and report what I see.

Update:

I used the T2 via Spotify Connect all weekend, continuously without a problem.

Yesterday and today (Monday, Tuesday), the failures started again. I am able to stop/restart the Spotify Connect service via the Lumin app and it works again, for a while. No cold-starting appears to be necessary.

I had hopes that the firmware upgrade fixed the problem, but I do not believe that to be the case. It may have improved things somewhat, but it does not seem to fix the core issue.

As I never had any of these problems in the days before the covid apocalypse, and the problem seems to coincide with daytime (US), weekday usage, it seems as though the issue could be load-related. At some point the Spotify connection fails and borks the Spotify Connect service. Pure speculation on my part, of course. Correlation != causation.

@wklie, if you've got a way to collect logging data from my T2, I'm willing to do that.

Intensively testing Spotify Connect in the last few days, I ran into a situation where Spotify plays on iPad but not on Lumin. Did the followings to no avail:

- Made sure I'm running latest Spotify app
- Rolled back my experimental changes
- Power cycled Lumin
- Tried different Spotify SDK
- Tried different versions of Lumin firmware
- Killed and restarted Spotify app
- Waited for another day to retest

Tried an Android device - that works! So I did the followings, again to no avail:
- Rebooted iPad
- Switched to a different WiFi SSID

Ultimately, what solved my Lumin Spotify problem is to logout from Spotify app, then relogin. Now Spotify can play to my Lumin setup.

But the story does not end here.

I set Spotify back to play on iPad, but there is no sound from the iPad. Switching back to Lumin, Lumin Spotify Connect playback is ok. Switch back to iPad, still no sound. Killed the Spotify app again and restarted it, still no good. I asked my marketing manager for help. He examined the volume status after double tap home, and tried some volume changes. Then he started YouTube app, which works of course. Back to Spotify, now it produces sound.

It's been a couple of weeks since I last chimed in on this issue. And no, I'm not giving up ;)

I'm still seeing a problem with Spotify Connect, requiring me to stop/start the connect service via the Lumin app->Options menu.

I can report that I've noticed that most Spotify playlists work without issue. In fact most of the curated playlists work fine, eg "Daily Mix 1", etc.

Where the problem seems to be most pronounced is the "Your Daily Drive" curated list. Playing this curated list ends in a borked Spotify Connect service (requiring stop/start) fairly regularly.

I'm speculating of course, but this is a playlist that Spotify updates from their end fairly frequently (eg - many many times a day, as it updates things like news podcasts). Might be related.

Thanks for the report. From the Lumin firmware point of view, we do not even distinguish what music is being played, let alone a particular Spotify playlist. So that is not likely to be a problem caused by firmware code written by us.

I'm just reporting what I'm seeing in the hope that you might be able to reproduce the issue, and either affect a remedy, or report it to the Spotify sdk team so they might remedy it. You've undoubtedly got access to internal debugging or logging information.

From a fellow (software) engineer's perspective, I understand what you're saying and am empathetic.

From a customer's perspective, I'm frustrated by the bug, regardless of its origin.

Since our Spotify Connect integration was done in late 2017, even though we've already integrated the March 2020 SDK, we will carry out a complete retest of our Spotify Connect implementation against the latest Spotify test suite for integrators to ensure the Lumin Spotify experience is as perfect as possible. This will take a period of time.

Hi, i'm unable to play spotify connect on my lumin D1. when i try to select device on my spotify app, lumin will appear then very quickly disappear under the devices available. can somebody confirm if it is working?

Please power cycle your whole network, starting from the WiFi router. Wait for 5 minutes, then power cycle the Lumin D1, and your devices running Spotify app.

If that does not work, in Lumin app, turn off Spotify Connect, wait for a few seconds, then turn it on again.

If that still does not work, describe your whole network topology, including the brand and model of the WiFi router, all access points, powerline network adapters, etc.
