For applicable models of Lumin, with Firmware 16 you may use Plex software to cast stereo music file (Hi-Res PCM / DSD / MQA) to Lumin (running as a Plex network music player client) without sample rate downgrade (i.e. unlike AirPlay).

(Technically, the Lumin Plex client functionality is NOT a port of the Plexamp package for Raspberry Pi, so Plex Pass subscription is NOT required for music file playback.)

This way you may use Plex app to control your music playback, in line with our multi UI strategy that also supports Roon, OpenHome / UPnP control apps, Tidal Connect, Spotify Connect, JRiver, JPlay for iOS, etc.

To do this you need:
- Lumin Firmware 16 for applicable models
- Latest version of Lumin app
- Plex account (free)
- Plex server (free)
- On mobile: latest version of Plex app (some options may require purchase) or Plexamp app (requires Plex Pass subscription)

Instructions for Plex music file playback:
- Create a free Plex account, setup the free Plex server on a computer or NAS
- Update to the latest Lumin app, update Lumin to Firmware 16 (or newer)
- In Lumin app settings for Lumin hardware, Sign in to Plex
- Launch Plex app (or Plexamp app if you have Plex Pass subscription) to play some stereo music
- In Plex app (or Plexamp app), cast to Lumin

Instructions for Plex Tidal playback:
- I do NOT recommend this unless you're fully committed to Plex - because Plex is not a MQA partner, through Plex you cannot get 24-bit MQA or 48/96/192kHz MQA from Tidal. With Tidal MQA, you get best sound quality from Lumin hardware through Lumin app, Tidal Connect, or Roon.
- You need to migrate your Tidal account and Tidal payment to Plex
- You need a Plex Pass subscription
- You need to use Plexamp app instead of Plex app to cast Plex Tidal to Lumin
- If you have an OpenAI API Key, you may enter it into Plexamp to try AI natural language based creation of playlist:
Plexamp adds "Sonic Sage" ChatGPT-based feature for creating incredible playlists

Note:
- Lumin support of Plex is limited to using Lumin hardware as a Plex network music player client with Plex software as a control point. At this time we do not support Lumin app browsing of music content from Plex server.
- Plexamp DSP features like Loudness Leveling, Sweet Fades, Equalizer, etc. are not supposed to work when casting to Lumin.
- Use of Plex software is preferred to Plex web interface

Initially Plex feature will be enabled for X1 P1 T3 T2 U2 (Mini) U1 (X / Mini) next week.

Congrats to the Lumin team! This is a big deal!! I met with On Li yesterday and this is awesome.

Is Plex support the only change in firmware version 16.0? I can’t seem to find any release notes.

yeah! congrats! i’ll likely buy a new Lumin. no, I will buy probaly two pieces. they do piss me off but i can say the following because ima fanboi? <thats a question mark

i called 4 dealers including our own: Can I order and how much $ is the L2?
not nobody knew nuthin. L whut?

Lumin T3 no fibre. No thanks i guess i gotta hookup T3 L2 with an old wire? ok.

the L2 rollout is ridiculous. my 2 cents. Lumin is disjointed or, explain T3 missing optical. no, P1 is $10k. gimmie L2 T3 optical combo hah!:hey:
maybe I don’t need optical but i think i do. i really do.

ps D2 no plex. /rant over
pps. Lumin app /so tired of red letters in the search box. dum. r/ant continues.:roflmao:

when if I get a deal I’m in on Lumin refresh. yes sir two thumbs up ( one and 7/8 tbh)

The Lumin L2 was previewed at AXPONA and Munich, but availability and pricing have yet to be set. Dealers can't share details that haven't been determined... stay tuned. "Good things are worth waiting for!"

yawn. but thanks. Makes me want to go far away from the brand. Silly marketing. Jackass marketing. Ship the dang thing or shut up. I am learning to hate this brand and like I already said I (was) a fan boi. Fine they can do what they want. What's my next buy? Lumin is bumped - for the moment. Crappy marketing. Fire the sob.

Why should I be so pissed. Because my ears are burned-in by Lumin and once I buy into a brand I hate to move away. The most loyal customer is getting pissed on. they are no longer an elite label...in my mind, period. Now I'm kinda lost and it pisses me off. yells at clouds!

Let me remind that Lumin stated here that they do not talk about future products. That is(was) integrity I can honor. Blowing smoke up my skirt with a new shiny box that I can't have, nor know nothing about but ooogle at. Not my kinda people.

Sorry to unload. But if a tree falls in the forest will anyone hear it.

I bought a Grimm DAC. Not the T3 with missing optical. Not the L2 mystery. I guess I'll try the Grimm but it could have been an Lumin L2+T3. But no one will sell me that setup up. They talk about it. They show shiny boxes at trade shows. Oh boy! I'll feed the Grimm from my D2. Wacky. Or I'll feed the other several DAC's I have from the D2. Good enough. Or maybe I'll just buy the dang Grimm MU1 and burn my ears with that. or something.

Plex feature is released to all models, including Lumin A1 2012.

Yes, I can confirm, it works with my Lumin D2.

One slight disappointment is that the image in Plex on my Apple TV doesn’t follow the album or track played through the Lumin DAC and/or Streamer. Or am I doing something wrong?

The web interface in the latest Plex version does not work for casting.

Try downgrading the Plex Server to 1.29.2.6364 - our understanding is that this should work on Windows or Synology.

Hi there @wklie I know this is an old thread, but my question is related to Plex so it seems this may be the best way to post it.

I have set up Plex to work with my Lumin D1. I have Plexamp app and Plex Pass. When I am sending my music to the Lumin it always says that the quality is 128 kbps, but all of my MP3s are either 320 or V0 quality, so none of them are nearly as low as 128. I believe I have all the settings correct for bit-perfect. Any ideas what is going on here? Screenshots below.

1. Without playing to Lumin, check the bitrate display of Plex/Plexamp app when playing to your phone speaker or headphone. If the bitrate is still wrong, check that you have set Plex transcoding to off, and all quality settings at Original or Maximum, in both Plex server and Plexamp. Also check that you're not using Plex remote playback, which involve other settings.

2. Copy a MP3 file from Plex server to a USB thumb drive. Plug the thumb drive to Lumin. In Lumin app, select Lumin USB Music Server as the library. Play the MP3 using Lumin app. Check the bitrate.
